I just needed to make some pieces of wood square... a jointer plane is not the easiest thing to do at the moment so I turned to my router table.

it pays to have a square and flat router table and this includes the fence system..my table is ok fitted with a nice aluminum plate but my fence is just made up of some mdf.

here is the un-square 1" x 3/4" x 32" stock....

so to setup, I inserted two pieces of cardboard (a sliding folder will suffice, easy to cut than finding some left over plastic laminates)..this will make at least a millimeter offset to the left side fence...

adjust the fence towards the blade of the router bit..i set mine at least 2mm away from the edge of the carbide.

tighten the bolts of the sliding fence to the main fence...

Re: Jointing on the router table

next is to align the router bit edge to the left side fence...or if you are using flush trim bit, you can also align the bearing with the left fence.
the shim I put behind the left fence should make at least a millimeter offset to the right side fence...

then, you tighten the main fence and fix it to the table...

turn on the vacuum then the router...
then you start routing...err jointing...
the key here is in the technique of feeding the material to the bit...that is, to push using the left hand the material immediately as it passed the spinning bit against the left side (offset) fence...and continue until you finish the entire stock..sometimes you will need 2 or three passes to achieve better results...
incidentally, Gmelina is soooo nice to work with tools both powered and manual...

here is the finished product

Re: Jointing on the router table

I got nice smooth edges using just a EZ cut flush trim router bit on this Gmelina wood...

even in this area with knots, the bit made a wonderful pass.

I wonder if the CMT with negative shear angle will produce better (smoother) results..

so to conclude, if you have short and narrow stocks of wood that are not square, you can still do wonders using the router table...

so who needs a jointer?
