Re: lacote guitar build

JB, mikko to

i called eric lastime he said he knows a new place to get them toog's, near the place where we had those toog's processed they have them in different sizes

uy mikks!!

talaga? then lets go and grab a few planks! i really like toog. denser than mahogany but not as rosewood. bends easily and looks great. the sound is very likable too. i bet it would sound better for steel string guitars, they have this quality that i think will suit steel strings. if they have a sander that will be really great. toog dust is toxic. made me sick for a day when i ran it under my drum sander.

btw, malapit na yung myrtle mo. about 0.5 mm to go 🙂

@ricky

thanks! yes, different woods will produce different sounds. depending upon who is listening, since tone is very subjective. the guitar sounds great. reminds me of early guitar pieces of the 17th century. but i had to take the bridge off. i saw a structural crack in the bridge so i have to replace it with better stock.

Re: lacote guitar build

Congrats! Really really beautiful.

Do you also give a name to each instrument you create?

How did the toog sound?

Re: lacote guitar build

thanks!

i dont put a brand name on my instruments. i just sign my name and thats it.

in an acoustic guitar, the top dictates sound. the back and sides only reflect it. with that i can say that toog is a fine tonewood with that regard 🙂

Re: lacote guitar build

What I meant by naming instruments is very much like giving a name to a boat. Stradivarius violins (at least, the famous ones) were given names, e.g. "Lady Tennant", "Red Mendelssohn"...

That way, when your instruments become treasures, they'll have their own terms of endearment!

Re: lacote guitar build

perhaps they will be just simply called jbarot's six strings in the 30th century! hehe

i wonder how a fret board is made? dont tell me go to youtube and find out yourself!

just great brader but i want more details of the wip...

now building guitars looked harder than i thought.

you must be some kind of master of patience...

cant foresee myself as a luthier one day eh...finish carpentry na lang siguro...but definitely not to be called a tool collector!

hahahahaha

Re: lacote guitar build

guitarmaking isnt that hard, but its not that easy either. its like any project, you take it step by step.

now i'm making two ukuleles out of scrap kamagong. i'll try to post pics of the stages and even how to slot the fretboards. i'll post them after i've bent the sides. medyo superstitious ako hehehehe

a preview

anyway, here's a commissioned work that i just finished. an electric uke with a maple top and apitong body and neck. i got the api from our old house when they renovated it. the wood is about 50 years old.

Re: lacote guitar build

very nice! this is one of my goals. I'll build up on skill and tools first before I brave into making my own guitar.

btw, how did you make the neck? is there a truss rod in there, sir?
