Re: lacquer spray painting

Since im into spray painting also... I'll share my experience. Adjust your spray gun to deliver more paint low pressure and it should be with sunlight to achieve a glossy finish.

In my experience, whenever i paint my works at night, i can not achieve a glossy finish. But when i spray paint at sunny day, i always got a glossy finish clear coat.
Hope this helps

Pls check the following items before you spray top coat:

1.) Check the tank of the compressor for possible H2O content. This is always a missed item during spray painting.
2.) Make sure that your mixing ratio as per manufacturers specs is followed. If you don't have a guide then assume that a reduction or thinning agent of about 25% by volume of your mix is followed. Example: 4:1 ratio = 4 parts base/top coat and 1 part thinner
3.) if you are spraying during cold or even wet season the use of flo or retarder helps in curing your film minimizing the hazing or whitish effect that condensation creates during these times. Glossiness is higher too when you use retarders. Do not exceed 5% by volume mixing ratio for retarders.
4.) Lacquers usually work between 35-50psi but is also dependent on the type of gun you use (HVLP/LVLP).
5.) Clean your gun and tips and spray test them using lacquer thinner just to check quality of misting before you use top coat.
From all these items I mentioned should you still experience the same symptoms a consultation with a pro in spraying technique may help solve these issues. Good Luck!:)

Re: lacquer spray painting

Boysen is good brand. Could it be the spray gun ? How about your compressor bro?

I'm not a painting expert but have had a few success with clear coat .I do spray wet when doing clear ... spray gun material flow control a bit on the high side. However I usually get some clouds if the gun is low on air pressure or is starved of air. None the less I always made sure the gun is fully cleaned before painting. That was when I only had one gun. Now a days I dedicated a separate spray gun only for clear coat use.

Re: lacquer spray painting

Maybe because we are using different type of spray gun and compressors... I think it is best to conclude that we should base it on experience. And share it here... Post post post your painted obra

Re: lacquer spray painting

I may not be into spray painting yet due to the facts that I do not have a big compressor and very much yet incomplete with the accessories needed in this type of painting but IMHO it would really be very beneficial for all members wanting to learn and experience this very interesting type of painting specially for our DIY projects needing good painting finish whether in metals or in wood.

So why not share and post your painted obras as bro nick have mentioned in his last post. W e encourage those who really use them almost daily for their projects or anyone with good knowledge in this form of spray painting. And for the noobs, lets get ideas from the painting experts, mingle with their discussions and learn the ins and outs of this process.

CHEERS and may all learn from this !! :agree:
