introducing my frankenstein workbench.

Now with front and end vise. dogholes and support board for working with long stocks and sheet materials.

This is the 52 1/2 that used to be in the tail end

This is the 53 record

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

more clamping options

clamping pressure is more than sufficient even though its only 1/3 of the way inside the vise jaws

I can actually clamp wider materials with this configuration.

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

nice Ben, does that mean you will be using your handplanes more? with those long pieces, time to get a jointer plane... no.7 or a LN or LV perhaps....:D

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

The support board design would be really useful as it can accommodate wider boards. 😎

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

buy a grozz #7 at panda and outfit it with a stanley blade instead...

the grozz knobs are rosewood btw and you can polish it further.

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

Thanks Timber,

pati nga speed square (had to buy from amazon) and a marking gauge (had to make one!) wala si stanley. This is after checking with 2 of the main distributors. There is still a #5

Doc,

I read reviews of the groz #7 on amazon.... it seems everybody hates it :P, My groz block plane is easy to tune kasi maikli lang ang sole, but to flatten a 22" plane..... thats going to be a pain. I would/might go for an LN or LV or a mujingfang(best bet is this). I am also sucked into wooden plane making... hmmmmm

I really love my workbench now... its so utilitarian, i could only imagine how heavy Timber's and Doc's workbenches are. Coz with my plywood top and two record vises.. it weighs quite a bit

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

I currently love my mujinfang small handplane, but. But, Japanese style handplanes need a special way of adjusting depth of cut which can be a hassle, unlike the modern stanley planes which are very easy to set up. tuning the sole is only done once, and once it is done well, you can just handplane all you can.
you can probably ask Moji what his take on this.

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

yeah, tapping and tapping and eyeballing and finger feeling, its what i do also with my wooden self made scrub plane, which is OK for a scrub, but might pose a headache with a jack plane that needs more precise adjustments.

So Moji.... yuhooooooooooo 🙂

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning
I read reviews of the groz #7 on amazon.... it seems everybody hates it
due to poor quality control.

i am happy just by looking at it but it never crossed my mind to get a #7.

get on your feet! who knows if you can make a scrub plane why not a 23 inch #7.2 plane!

but LV #7? will remain just a dream as i cant do much handplaningnow unlike before...i cant put too much strain on my tummy right now.

you must be really happy with your modded workbench.

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

have a length of teak sitting and staring at me wondering when will it become a jointer plane hahahaha

Nevertheless i need a good blade and a good cap iron, which apparently mujingfang sells. and based on some reviews, these are more superior than the A2 steel that LN and LV uses.

and yes, i am really happy with my modded frankenstein work bench... i feel like i just got an entire new tool altogether

Re: lazy sunday, did some "spring" cleaning

Its easy adjusting wooden planes, tap here, tap there, you get the hang of it once in a while. In planes requiring minute blade protrusion, finesse is key. I just got the hang of setting my muji smoother and now it cuts fluffy shavings.

Your teak would make a great sole for a wooden jointer...go go go! The nice thing about wooden planes is that you can true the sole up easily.

The only negative i can say about mujingfang blades is its hard to remove nicks because its so darn hard..if you dont have a grinder you will need to start with a very rough grit of sandpaper..
