I dont know where to put this post. Since this is the top thread (woodwokng) im putting it here. I hope the admin will move it somewhere appropriate. (please create a Metalworking forum ;))
This forum site seem to need a little bit of re-organization, a typical pinoy handyman is not only a woodworker. Im sorry its a bit direct, but i would like to push this community to be better for all types of handyman.

------
I like working on wood, metal, and fiberglass.
I started getting in into this hobby just this year. So most of my projects are always turn into a learning process.

Here, Ive been wondering about this for some time now.
Im right now working on an lcd tv wall mount project. I got this black iron pipe and im wondering how i would deal with a little bit of rust inside it. If i will close it will it stop growing, will it rust from inside going out? It will be hard to clean the inside and paint it. I have lots of it, im sure there is a proper way of dealing with it.

Re: LCDTV wall mount

correct me if i am wrong bro, but as long as the metal isnt exposed to moisture, there is no way it can rust...oxidation is different from rust formation di ba? rust is due to water and oxidation will just change the color of the metal, i.e iron.

goodluck on your project..i hope later you will open a thread for home cinema project.hehe

i also would like to see this site for every hobbies known to man...anyway, the site is still young and we need more contributors..good we have oneTimber715 who still have the time to at least organize the threads here despite his many commissioned works! judge pa later sa woodworking contest...

Jay for one is also a contributor sa automotive set up, tools and the like.

we already have the participation of some good people like Golden of Bosch and from the Hafele people.

More to come.

Maybe Mayon will have their own seminar in the future...rest will follow.

The more the merrier so we could entice distributors of fine tools to participate in our future endeavors.

hala! keep busy!

That's correct bro, oxidation vs actual rusting...

However, if it you really need to stop whatever it is, that's causing it, this may help... plug one end of the pipe and pour Turco or any other rust converter fluid inside and try to spread it thoroughly, and immediately pour everything out again, do it fast so you can use it on other pipes that you plan to coat. Of course the used fluid should not be poured back to its original container, and it will continue to deteriorate unless the reagents strenght have been totally used up.

It can be a bit costly, but should do the trick.
Rust converters are available in diff brands and quality, and normally available in mall hardwares and other constuction supply.
Good Luck on your project!

Could those metal treated with rust converters left without any protection?

Re: LCDTV wall mount

Hi Jarod:
Yes. Once converted, it is chemically changed to another substance that is not in any way to rust any further. The new skin surface has therefore become a new coating, although the appearance doesn't normally look good. Certain rust converter brands will result in dirty black, while others to a dull gray color, patches of different shades probably due to amount of concentration on some areas. Most people would therefore paint over it, but I think primers would not be necessary anymore.
Instructions are usually printed on containers of popular brands.
Hope this helps... 😉

Re: LCDTV wall mount

Do as they suggested.
and then you can overdo it with this,

Fill up the pipe with oil (gear oil, motor oil, whatever) then close weld it.
