our front door doesnt have a knob. only a deadbolt and its starting to be quite impractical. So we decided to buy a lockset and borrowed our office's maintenance's hole saw set for a night
the door was quite thick so i had to go to the otherside to drill in order to get the hole. Good thing the pilot drill did protrude on the other side to act as guide.
my greatest fear was alignment. However, the lockset came with a pattern guide so that helped alot
Re: lockset installation
mortised with a chisel..... need more practice
halfway there and it all fits!
and aligned!
finally we have a knob on the outside
Re: lockset installation
mortising with a chisel is better this time
perfect fit 🙂
Re: lockset installation
Nicely done Ben! Chiseling is the one I most hate to do.
Re: lockset installation
Second to last picture, did the lock come with, what is the correct name of this part, a kind of cup, usually plastic, that fits under the strike plate and hides the roughness of the depression in the jamb.
Some locks include this cup, some don't. Looks like it did not come with the set?
For concrete jambs, it is good to have because the depression harder to do nicely than in wood. Anyone know if this cup is available separately?
Re: lockset installation
Hi Guad
nope the lockset did not come with the plastic cup thing. my lockset is Schlage. i have shclage locksets in the bedrooms. but they come with the plastic thing unlike the one i installed last night.
Re: lockset installation
For making mortises for the door lock plates in already installed doors, I wonder how well a handheld mini-router held horizontally against a jig would work.
Since doors can be double as in this case, it looks like you would need two different jigs, or a slightly more complicated single jig that would work regardless of whether or not there is a lip.
Is there an industry standard size for those strike plates (and the plate on the other side, whatever it's called), or does every manufacturer have its own size, which would require an adjustable jig or specific jig per manufacturer.
Re: lockset installation
ive seen Violaine make a jig for door hinges i think. should be similar for strike plates
my right door had a lip hence making a jig would prove troublesome. So hand chiseled mortise was the next best bet.
i suspect that there maybe an industry standard on them just like hinge holes... "system 32".. a little something we learned in HAFELE. In a nutshell, all european standard hinges, door handles, fixtures for cabinetry , etc. .. their mounting holes are based on a 32mm interval of each other...and so on. Hafele even has a universal jig for this.. anywhere from attaching fasteners to concealed hinges... that jig makes you align the screw holes and whatever other holes perfectly... they sell the jig... 20K pesos
If i was a professional cabinet maker that jig would be well worth the price.
