Re: MDF Boards Projects

Im using CAD software in designing cabinets.

I need first the design to have a cutting layout. Sample cutting layout on 4' x 8' boards.

This help me to minimize board wastage. One wrong cutting ended me to buy another sheet which cost more than P1K.

Re: MDF Boards Projects

My SWMBO is helping to visualized the design. She's using Google Sketchup program.

Re: MDF Boards Projects

anlupit ng mga project ni sir bryant 🙂

sir question lang po about MDF cabinets,

1.in comparison po on cost and durability , between the MDF and marine plywood ang gaggamitin?kasi po iirc the MDF is prone to moisture problem in the long run?mas mura ang marine plywood per piece compared to MDF same thickness?

2. for cabinets po ba na marine ply ang gagamitin from carcass to the doors then finished with a laminate is more expensive?

3.ano ano pong basic tools yun kailangan pag mga laminates and MDF cabinets ang project na balak mo?e.g. router?ano bits ang kailangan?any recommendations?

thanx po sir

Re: MDF Boards Projects

@Adzz

1. Hindi advisable gamitin ang MDF boards sa mga area na laging basa. Durability - Matibay ang MDF basta you know how to join and assemble it. Most kitchen cabinet makers Moisture resistant MDF at Particle board ang ginagamit.

Cost comparison:

Woodgrain Melamine boards (MDF) - P1,800/sheet (4'x8')
(both faces are wood grain finish)

Marine Plywood (3/4" x4'x8') - P1000
Laminates Woodgrain (4'x8') - P700 x 2 = P1400
Adhesive - 550
Total = P2,950

2. Using Plywood then finished it with laminates mas mahal aabutin mo. See cost comparison above.

3. Basic power tools lang gamit ko. Circular Saw with 60T blade, Router with Flush trim router bits, Drills, Jig Saw, clamps.

Re: MDF Boards Projects

@bryan,

the thing about this double sided covered mdf, the laminate (melamine) is so thin and prone to scratch..only ideal for wardrobe cabinetries.

btw ...are there any alternatives to the highly intoxicating "rugby"?

i have a melamine glue specifically for plastic laminate edging made by Titebond but i am running out of it. Its almost odorless and works excellently.

i didnt know that there is a moisture resistant mdf!:)

are they available as well from worldclasslaminates?

thanks for the info.

I am not familiar with the tesda course, but I can guarantee you that you will not learn everything there, there is just too much! They can probably teach you the basics that you would need to start and get along the hobby.
I have been coming across several programs in the USA like workbench building or bowl turning or marquetry to carving. there things alone will take you more than 5 years to learn and another 5 to 10 years to master. and those are just a small part of woodworking.
Carpentry on the otherhand is a smaller subject that one can learn in 2 years (if you are devoted) or less if you don't care on quality.

You need to protect melamine board carefully during cutting and handling, finished na kse siya.

There are hot melt glue (pellet types) na ginagamit pandikit ng PVC Edge band but you need portable edge banding machine.

There are available Moisture Resistant MDF board.

I think you will learn more dito sa PHM. Tulad ko mas madami ako nakukuha idea sa mga masters dito sa pinoyhandyman.

Re: MDF Boards Projects

More than a week na itong WIP ko, pasensya na ngayon ko lang napicturan kung kelan patapos na.

The cabinet is for the basin type lavatory. Made of 3/4" Marine plywood with woodgrain laminate. Yun loob is finished using Boysen Enamel Paint to protect the board from moisture and water. Hole in the left is for the faucet and the other one is for the basin strainer.

Test fitting of fixtures (faucet & lavatory). Im just waiting for the 1/2" thick brown glass top na pagpapatungan ng basin.

doors not yet installed bibili pa ng soft close concealed hinges at door handles.

Re: MDF Boards Projects

Nice work!

I've been interested in melamine boards for a long time, but hesitant to use it due to lack of experience. In my limited experience though, I've learned to hate finishing plywood. Magastos din sa labor at materiales.
