Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

Hey Armand! I've also been thinking about this jig. Can you post photos how to use your creation?

Otherwise, I'll have to invade your house again for a demo!:p

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

thanks Timber..ha ha...sa dami ng frames ng video mukha ko pa ang binalandra. Yes kung hindi maganda ang result I wouldn't dare to upload this in youtube.

I got good comments at Lumberjocks and twice favorited already as of this posting, and finally I got a1Jim's attention coz his is more complicated.

The cuts can still be improved by using spiral up cut router bit but that isn't available here, i hope i can find one in Shanghai next month.

@Ding: pa-renovate ko muna shop ko before your 2nd invasion he he..

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

Sorry, Armand. Didn't see the video link earlier.

No need to renovate. Your shop is much cleaner and orderly than mine.

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

Hey Armand, great pics posted and great youtube video clips regarding Mortise and Tenon jig, enjoyed watching it and thanks for sharing that in YouTube. :p

I'm no woodworker yet but for now just collecting the necessary tools and absorbing and learning knowledge whenever I can here at PHM. [ RE: woodworking ]

You may not know me but I do appreciate what you did, share your adaptation on video and correct me if I'm wrong I think you are the first PHM member to share your knowledge in woodworking on YouTube. I salute you for sharing. 😉 😎

Again thanks and God bless

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

@chisel: that is true and theirs are more complicated than mine and the cost is a fortune for most of us woodworkers here in the philippines. I think its the MLCS router jig but their router is steady and the woodpiece is the one moving, others i already forgot the websites. What makes mine different is it has x-y-z axes, G-codes na lang kulang at CNC na sya. The "screw stopper" is the big innovation on this jig, it was a "eureka" when i was thinking how to make repeatable tenon lengths. It turned out that its the same stopper that will determine the mortise depth. This is the simpliest mortising and tenon jig ever built.

Honestly, the hardest part is building the flatform and squaring the rail guides (drawer guides). Had to cut the 12" drawer guides into 8" and many times the ball bearings fell on the floor that i had to crawl under my workbench many times to pick up the ball bearings. If i'm going to build one again, i will utilize sliding dovetail as rail guide.

@rosy: i am humbled by your comment, maraming salamat.

@whuups: he he...the blueprint is stuck in my mind...google ka lang daming video ng mortising jig.

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

Saw the video. Fantastic!

Where did you get those threaded rods and the stop?

When you set up for cutting the mortise, do you also automatically have it set up for the corresponding tenon? Or do you have to remeasure and re-setup? I would think that, at least, for the depth, it should be the same since you would use the same stop setting.

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

The threaded rod is from KingBolt. Just opposite Sta Lucia at the corner of Marcos HW and Tuazon under the footbridge stair. I got 3 feet for only 50 pesos.

The stop, actually its an automotive nut. I got it in my box collected from years of DIY'ing my cars.

Before starting your cuts, you must have a practice woodpiece with a mortise slot and the length of the slot should be longer than your intended tenons. Your first goal is to get the exact width of the router bit. Subtract this router bit size from your tenon piece and scribe the lines to determine the waste. Start buy trial and error muna, cut the waste little by little until the tenon fits snuggly to the practice mortice slot. When you determined the exact vertical position of the router bit, lock the nuts on the vertical rod and start cutting the tenon on all sides. The resulting dimensions of the tenon is then transferred to the actual mortise piece. This is how i sequenced my video clips.

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

HEY ARMAND,

You bit me to the race in posting videos on YouTube, but that's very ok, just last week or so I was thinkering on the idea of putting my current welding table project on video since nobody yet here in PHM has done it coz I discovered my digital camera has a mode of 30 seconds of video. I got so excited about it when my son showed me the video of me working coz he was the one taking pics to be posted on metal working forum. :p

By the way I told him to try to learn how to upload such video cause I also wanted to share the design, the whole process of my WIP and the final outcome of the table so that others may be inspire by it specially the welding enthusiasts here at PHM 😉 and maybe outsiders too.

Anyway I would like again to congratulate you on sharing, your video is very inspiring, I love watching it and learning from it, walang bola ito. Mind you Armand you started this video thing, I think many will now try this style because as I see it, its a very effective way of sharing ones WIP instead of just pictures. I for one will be doing this in the near future. 😎

Have a nice day and God bless.

Re: Mortise and Tenon Jig

ha ha Rosy...thanks again

(a little off-topic here): tell your son to practice Windows' Moviemaker so he can edit your clips. he might need a video converting software too. It took me 2 hours to compile everything and to produce a 9 minute movie 😉
