thanks Bee...
today I started to sand it down again... first grit is 320...
then after is 400 grit (dry).

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
the irregularities can be clearly seen as the top has been sanded, wiped it clean three times... then I started to apply another coat of poly, this time thinned with paint thinner around 20%.
it dries faster this time, unfortunately I didn't have time to wait for it to dry. 1130pm na kasi eh...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
When sanding the poly, is it not critical to sand it down flat before adding the next coat?

no, it isn't critical. I planned this process bec I wanted most of the open grain to be filled. hence the thick fist coat. and to make sure it gets good coverage I flooded some parts, thats why I had to go to this step. if your materials is perfect already, you can go straight to thinned poly and apply as preferred...

Oh ok. of all the finishes, brushed on poly is the hardest to apply for me. I can never get it smooth and defect free.

I reckon, this would be easier and better sprayed. and since you are better than me at spraying paint, I think you should give it another try...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
My only concern with spraying poly is it dries slow..im afraid i might make the garage all sticky with poly overspray..
Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
cover the floor with newspaper, as for drying time, I guess the more thinner you use the faster it dries. now the biggest concern imho is that if you don't have an enclosed area from dust and air circulation is contamination while drying.
this is what I did to prevent people from touching it out of curiosity or lack of care...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
you should give it clean space for 4 hours for drying pala just to be sure...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
That's another concern..the garage is open air hehehe..my poly would be all furry by the time it dries.
Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
that is correct, hence you should make or look for a makeshift tent to cover your project while finish dries...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
sir timber,what kind,brand of stain did you use?is it oil,non grain raising,etc.?
Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...
it is Ace stains (oil based). I did raise the grain TWICE before staining and made good results. taking the extra steps early makes the difficult parts manageable...
too bad Doc, I was kinda hoping you could have joined us earlier sa Boysen sem...
