Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

and with that I can make this...

the previous holes were from the imperfect one... but the last one works to a tee... accurate to the line...

I hope it works...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

I'm thinking that probably the use of dowels will make the jointed table top stronger compared to using biscuits. I might be wrong.

biscuits are there for guide use only and offers little strength, but dowels do add strength that can rival tenons of the same dimensions... thus, it is much better to use, but not as easy as a biscuit to align...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

Considering the size of the table top as well as it's thickness then I would choose dowels.

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

brought the 4100 to the site and cut the last side to make the stocks square. they were not perfect but very close that a Stanley no. 7 could do the trick... and the engineering square is a must! that is if you want a flat top...

got 9 dowels into this joint and it fits greeeeat!

the rest of the bunch waiting to get glued, but still a lot of work to get then tight fitting...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

You need more clamps! hehe

I guess your dowel jig really works! Those lines look lined up real straight.

hehehe, huhuhu. oo... 😉
but I can clamp three stocks with what I have. so what I plan to do is clamp 3 boards on one end and the other 3 in another stage. that way I can use less clamps to put them together and the glued boards will act as cauls... ;);)

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

How will you do final clamping when you assemble the whole table top?

well with the dowels to guide them in place, plus making sure that the joints are square, I feel confident I can have this done with as little as 4 clamps. got two 6ft pipe clamps and two showa 54" clamps... maybe one or two more will do... hehehe reason enough to buy new clamps :p

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

needed a fixed space for the dowels which was 3/4" and with that, all I needed to align was one more axis... it works great, very simple to build. got the two halves of the table top glued already. will clamp the whole top bukas...

Re: My Commissioned Conference Table build...

had a guest in the work area...

Moji, came and help start leveling my top (though we started leveling the bottom first). his scrub plane made the work so much faster taking shavings as thick as 1/8" thick...
here are the top pictures not yet jointed in the middle...

with the showa clamp just holding the boards together (the clamp is real sweet to use and has all the torque I need)...
