Hi guys. I'm kinda new here but already made some post and got a lot of ideas and tips. I like doing a lot of stuff especially if its something I've never done before or something new to me. Carpentry is not new to me, but been doing it for quite some time already but didn't actually got serious about it. Dati kasi basta tumayo ang binubuo ko, ayos na. But now, I want to be a bit more serious about it by learning joinery, using hand and power tools properly, finishing, etc.. but first I need to make a workbench to help me do this better.

Problem is that I live in an apartment where free space is really hard to find. Good thing my room has its own balcony but as of most balcony, its small. Its just roughly 45"x110". But its all I have so I have to make the most of it.

nough said.. im getting boring.. :sleepy:
So I designed my workbench to be small. and here it is:

Re: My first workbench... plus an introduction..

continuation..

The workbench is made of 2x4 reclaimed palochina bought from timberport. The top is a 1/2 thick MDF which I got from a friend.. the bottom is just a plywood I have laying around. It has bench vise bough from han's tools in shang which I added 1/2 MDF to make it bigger. The table dimension is 40"x17" and 27" tall.

Re: My first workbench... plus an introduction..

@doms,

a handyman/woodworker in bloom!

your workbench seems sturdy and functional with all those 4 x 4s...

kaya lang medyo expose sa moisture yang mdf mo..bka mag swell..lagyan mo kaya ng sanding sealer top and bottom mga two coats para protection sa moisture.

and it is sporting a front vise ha..

that wb should produce some nice woodworking projects imho.

you have the necessary hand tools to build one.

enjoy the craft! and thanks for sharing your pics...

Re: My first workbench... plus an introduction..

by the way, I did not permanently glue it so when I move to another apartment I can put it to my car..

This is the picture of the frame. I used 5" bolts for the legs.

Nice and compact! I can sense your excitement. Go and do some projects! You'll get lots of help and encouragement here.

One question/warning: Is your balcony protected from rain? There may be a roof but, on a windy and rainy day, can you keep your tools and workbench dry?

Just don't want you to lose all you've worked on in the next typhoon.

here is my jurassic workbench in my dirty shop, wala yang front vise kasi C-clamp lang gamit ko dati..you can also see my first miter box, stanley # 4 and my first table saw and my first ever jewelry box project.. This pic was taken on July 2010.

seriously ang cute ng halaman sa tabi ng WB mo.

Re: My first workbench... plus an introduction..

@doms,

and then if you have the Boysen sanding sealer, apply it with a 2" brush...wait for at least 30 minutes..sand it lightly using 240 grit...remove the dust with cloth and apply another coat...put some face mask for the lacquer fumes..i also suggest you put the same sealer on to the leg posts as well..soak the bottom of the feet and no need to sand.

V

oh btw...buy a lacquer thinner to remove the sealer...

in between brushing, keep your brush wrapped in plastic..when youre done with painting, its time to soak and clean your brush in lacquer thinner...the final wash is to clean the brush in soapy water..hang it dry then when its dry, wrapped the bristles using old newspaper, tie with a rubber band..

pls dont buy cheap paint brushes...like "Globe" brand...disposable ito...sayang pera...LOL

Thanks sir balarila!
It actually don't have enough protection from the rain.. I was thinking of making a toolbox with sliding drawers to protect them from rain and probably thief 😮 (knock on wood)
It will also serve as some practice before starting my projects (jewelry boxes).

As of now, kapag umuulan I put them in my toolbox.. hassle lang kasi kapag nasa toolbox ko ang hirap kunin ng dapat gamitin..

Ganyan ang gusto kong gawing jewelry box!! 😮
