:D....malayo pa brad, malayo at marami pa akong dapat malaman...

the asturo ??
gastos na naman...

Re: my special project...lectern build.

I'm a woodworking amateur but I think the choice of wood made a lot of impact on the project's final outcome.

Very very beautiful lectern. God bless you Jon.

parehas lang din tayo brad jayL,
feeling ko rin newbie ako sa woodworking, especially when master timber is around.

wood choices and the finishing materials are some key fractors.
the BLO contributed a lot, in giving highlights to the wood pattern.

thanks ang God bless you too...

that's why i really need good woods...
pero baka abutin pa next year to.
kaya i'm no master pa brad...

pews are a good complimant sa lectern, yun nga lang marami pang church projects other than that...

Re: my special project...lectern build.

Bro Jon, I'm looking on the after-BLO pictures and the final product pictures. Would there be a significant difference if you didn't anymore applied the stain? I asked this because I see them to be quite similar already.

Post-BLO

Finish product

I mean the grains are already highlighted and the only difference is the a slight darker shade and shine due to the poly. I'm wondering if the BLO - Poly result with also be quite near to the BLO - Stain - Poly approach. If it is, then savings in stain money and time is what I'm after.

Honestly, I wold like to test it myself but I do not have the materials and it would be better answered by someone familiar to these kinds of finishing like you.

i'll start a new thread for the table build. simple table lang naman...
may tentative plan nako sa table top, a thiick tops ( that's the reason for the # 7 )
pero yung legs wala pa...
and then yan na nga siguro ang next.
the altar ?
yan nadagdagan na naman yung plan ko...
the truth is, bare na bare pa yung stage ng church namin...
sige brad hope you stay put before the start of the new projects.
thanks master timber...

actually i decided the use of BLO, kasi hind maganda naging resullt ng finish ng ottoman projects.
sige i'll make another test too, since i have some stocks, of same wood left.

thanks for the kind approach sir jarod.

Re: my special project...lectern build.

sir jarod,
here's the results of the test i've made concerning the differences between the;
BLO + stain + poly ,

stain + poly only...

within the test, i've included also the

BLO + poly approach.

hope this might help...

same wood pieces as the lectern are being used...

started with the pieces dampened with wet cloth...

then applied the BLO first on the right and left side , stain on the middle...

after the BLO dries, apply the stains...
and then a single coat of each sanding sealer and the polyurethane...

the result gives depth in color on the side with a coat of BLO + stain + poly ( far right )
while the one without BLO ( middle ) , somewhat pale ( malata )..

jayL was right , wood selection produces a huge impact on the projects final outcome.

for me it was only an option that putting BLO, will give a somewhat different but good results on the final finish. that's why i say it enhances the wood grain pattern...
anyway, sorry for the wrong notion that the BLO, is the only one that gives impact on the wood grain pattern.
hope this clears all the doubts about the addition of the BLO to our wood finishing.

thanks to you sir jarod, to those comments of yours, these helps us a lot going to our future woodworking projects...

notice :
due to the excitement,
there were wrong markings on the second pics...
corrections done on the last pics...

Re: my special project...lectern build.

From the wood selection and stain pigment used in the experiment, I would say the BLO brought out the redness while the stain brought out the darkness giving the wood a good contrast of colors thus the enhanced grain pattern effect.

I guess a reddish stain would give less standout given a BLO treatment to a red hued wood. It would still enhance but less since the red hue will be contributed by the BLO already so not much effort, time and money is needed for a red stain.

Re: my special project...lectern build.

I actually believe Jarod that blo will impart a amber color to the wood and will make reddish wood redder and brownish wood even darker or if you put it on maple it actually turns it yellowish to a certain degree.

Re: my special project...lectern build.

I see, so it basically enhances the color of the wood itself making half of the stain work (unless staining a wood to project a different kind of wood instead).

Need to find a place to keep and find my small amount of BLO then...
