Re: palo china fininishing touch

HI there spyksetter,

Bro, I have two choices that I always use and have been proven effective. May I suggest using SOLIGNUM brown, if you want the wood to appear darker, two layers will suffice. Solignum wood preservative will penetrate deep in the wood grains, makes it water repellant, its anti bukbok and anti anay ( termites ). 😮

Now if you preffer your palo china as is, natural appearance ba, you can use the Solignum clear, it has the same wood properties as the former solignum.

There is another brand that I use more often in preserving wood, its PHENOSEAL, its a clear liquid waterproofing , its non-toxic, non flammable and safe to use liquid. It seals almost all porous surfaces, from wood to concrete, bricks and plaster, even fabrics or canvas and its odorless . :p

Maybe after this wood wood proofing application is done and has been dried for somtime, you can now apply your desired varnish. Let's wait for other experts here in wood working to chime in and suggests the best finishing/varnish for your palo china. Hope this helps. :goodluck: 🙂

for outdoor use, look for spar urethane. Ace carries these kind with the ace brand. while this will protect it from the elements, it will not protect it from insects like termites.

Sir, kumusta na iyong gate mo? Ano ang naging choice mo to finish the palochina?

Pano mo kinabit iyong maliit na palochina sa upper part ng gate?

Interested din ako, kasi balak ko din metal gate with wood planks and accent.

Re: palo china fininishing touch

My advice may be too late for this gate but let me give it anyway for the sake of anyone here who may want to waterproof wood.

Palo-China is very soft. And, since it's used as a gate, I'd apply something to make it tough to all the dings and bumps it will be subjected to. I'd put fiberglass cloth embedded in epoxy resin. The fiberglass makes it tougher (and nearly transparent) while the epoxy seals it, completely waterproof. Since insects would not be able to detect it (as it's sealed), then it's also protected from insects. Now, since epoxy resin has no UV protection, I'd top is with Spar Varnish (urethane) with the gloss desired (Semi Gloss or Hi Gloss). This is what boatbuilders do to wooden hulls.

You can get the epoxy resin, fiberglass, and applicators at Polymer Products in Pasig (at Joe Borris street just off C5). Spar Varnish is available at Ace.

Hey, Timber, maybe I can volunteer to demonstrate how this is done in the next EB. Para naman may contribution ako.

WOW !!! Another educational and great information from another boat master, that's bro balarila, sige bro sa next EB kay na Timber mag demo ka naman how to apply this fiberglass/epoxy resin so that other members attending will be educated also. 😉 :p

I'm pretty sure this will be a very interesting contribution. I'll attend that EB and would love to learn that process, the mixtures and applications on wood.

CHEERS bro ding.

sir on hold muna yung gate ko kasi medyo naghahanap p ko ng magandang materials to finish the wood , yung maliliit na palochina naka ipit lang sa square bar then ill put a flat bar on at the back para sa added support

Sure Ding, maybe you can invite us over so you need not bring the materials? We can have the eb there para maiba ang venue... If that suits fine let me know when you are convenient so we can arrange the eb....

Would kiln dried Tanguile be a better alternative and would require less preparation?

i see. binalak ko din sana yung ganyan sa gate ko kasi magandang tingnan. but after reading the preparation of softwood for exterior use, i think i may just resort to a full metal gate. 🙂

Re: palo china fininishing touch

Sirs,

What is the best way to finish palochina furniture? I would like the stain to be a bit brown, but not glossy. Parang matte finish lang na litaw ang wood grain.

TIA. 🙂

I'd be happy to have you all here. But better take a poll first. I live in Antipolo which could be a looong drive for some people. It's Sumulong, Antipolo, BTW, near Padi's Point, so not really as far as the poblacion (church) but still out there.

May have spoken too soon, though. Just realized all my Nov weekends are full already and December tends to be hectic with the holidays. Will see if I can squeeze in Dec 10.

If we do this, will show how to sheathe wood with fiberglass and epoxy. Also some demo on laminating and filleting. Hmmm... do you think we should start a new thread?

We might be having a Bosch contest soon with an eb dated around Dec. 17 or 18 for awarding and Christmas party for all PHM members. I am just waiting for confirmation.... it will be held in the new office of Bosch as the last time.
