Hello mga kaPHMers! Medyo matagal na ako di nakapag-post dito.
Here is my latest WIP

My sister in law ask me to build a room divider. Nothing fancy basta it must be lite enough for her to carry around. Not to be out done my wife also wants one for her office but she wants picture frames installed so she can place pictures of our family. This will be a quicky project. May deadline pa yung isang project ko.

Cut the wood to size and added grooves. Sorry no pics on how the frame was made. But the grooves on the frame were made using the table saw. I made two passes to center the grooves. This will hold the plywood and polycarbonate sheets.

Made daya here, placed strips of plywood on each end to hide the hole. They will not notice it. :shh:

The top, middle and bottom frame.

Re: Room Divider

@woodworkboy,

what do you mean by "twinwall"?

what i only know is that the available polycarbonate sheet for roofing/ shade purposes are made like corrugated boxes.

id still prefer this polycarbonate sheets in that they are quite easy to be cut to size by your ordinary cutter versus the frosted hard acrylic sheets which needs to be cut by at least a circular saw (but the edges will melt due to the heat build up at the blade's edge) ruining the edge.

sandblasted? why not get the frosted acrylic plastics i mentioned above in most aluminum and glass store? there are many designs to choose from.

besides, the polycarbonate sheets are so light...a woman definitely can move the divider every so often.

imho

Hi Sir V,
eto po yung twinwall the most common polycrabonate na ginagamit for roofing and canopy. daming nagsilabasan na chinawese quality. yan nga yung katulad ng corrugated boxes.

eto yung plain solid sheet (something similar to polymethyl methacrylate but stronger)

pag may budget pwedeng cnc machine.

OT:
one more thing, madalas napagkakamalang pareho ang polycarbonate at acrylic due to their similarities. Plexiglass is to acrylic and Lexan is polycarbonate. mas brittle ang acrylic kaysa polycarbonate. pag chinawese polycarb talagang magmemelt yun. di pa ako nagkaproblema sa GE Lexan cutting. we used both circular and jigsaw. minsan score and snap cutting kaya din pag mas manipis.

Re: Room Divider

SirTimber, eto po sample ng sandblasted polycarbonate (4.5mm plain solid sheet).

eto naman etched lexan (polycarbonate).

Re: Room Divider

i see.

but why do you have to sand blast the plexiglass when you can adhere a frosted film? pra permanent?

id rather use the acrylic sheet with designs for this purpose...

hindi ba maingay pag nagsa sandblasting? sorry i didnt see one but i only know of sandlblasting when removing rust or something.

would you need extra protection from the "sand"? do you need a compressor just the same?

i simply would not jump into the hassle of sandblasting sheets if i can buy a similar one with no noticeable difference from the "usual" customers..

to each his own hehe

can you post how the photo above was sandblasted? id like to know more of this sandbalsting thing in acrylics...just being curious.

thanks

Sir, i never tried sandblasting acrylic yet. bending acrylic lang po nagawa ko. Sir, again plexiglass (pmma/acrylic) is different to lexan (polycarbonate). blasting polycarbonate para permanent. frosted film is just an alternative if blasting is not accessible.

i dont use acrylic much since it behaves in a brittle manner than the polycarbonate.

maingay yung sandblasting. glass bead media ang gamit and yes need compressor of course. protection is a must.

to each his own nga naman. sandblasting is too much work pero kung gusto mo ng extra effort, ok lang naman siguro.

cge sir, pag nagawi ako sa planta. pipiktyuran ko yung equipment at proseso. wala na po ako sa plastic industry ngayon.

Thanks,
Paolo

Re: Room Divider

Sorry for the delay, have to finish my other project sa kabilang site. (Deadline na kasi today)

Masked the polycarbonate with 3M Painters Tape and newspaper.
Applied BLO (boiled linseed oil) and brushed two coats of PYE Polyurethane Varnish. Sanding between coats. Sorry no pics of the process.

Installed stainless piano hinges. Got them from a store along T. Mapua St. just across To Suy.
(P 170/pc 6 feet in length)

Please take note of the orientation of the hinges it will save you the time and the pain of re-installing them.

Drilled pilot holes then the screws, lots of them.

Re: Room Divider

After about an hour of drilling here is the completed room divider. Just need to remove the mask on the polycarbonate.

My son helped me remove the mask. Bakit may knife?

I installed plastic gliders at the bottom. Sorry, forgot to show the bottom
It can stand on its own. Hindi pa kasi tapos yung assistant ko removing the mask at the back.

Well that's my room divider. Thanks for viewing. I still have to make another one for my wife's office. To be continued...
