This weekend I had the opportunity to use quite a few of my power tools as usually I buy sun dried S2S wood for my boatbuilding projects. For my current project I bought two boards: a 2" x 8" x 20" white lauan and a 1 x 8" x 16' red lauan.

The white lauan is on the left already missing about 2m from it, the red lauan is on the right.

Here is a picture of the result:

To get the pieces I needed I used a portable circular saw, a table saw, a thickness planer, a jointer, and a miter saw - more or less in this order.

The portable saw was used to cut off a rough piece. Then the table saw to rip a long the length. The thickness planer to plane the two sides wide sides flat. Using only a thickness planer is not the ideal way, a planer first is better, but it can be done though it takes longer. Next thickness was jointed against one of the wide sides.

The critical challenge is to put in just enough allowances so the finished pieces end up with the correct dimensions. Also, I can be challenging manhandling big pieces of wood especially in my cramped workspace.

Jointer deployed:

Re: S2S to S4S

What is the difference of Lauan from Tanguile? I get confused with those two.

Re: S2S to S4S

Have you changed blades on the jointer yet or do you just sharpen these? I recently purchased some items from ebay and happen to chance on some good deals going on for these Deltas. Too bad I could not purchase one as the budget was only for automotive stuff. You seem to be happy with this Delta.

How about some pics of the Thicknesser.

Boat building really requires a lot of space.

To be honest, I'm not really sure. I think the two are one and the same although actually there variety of Lauan is wide. I'm more a look and feel guy when it comes to selecting wood.

No I haven't. I've sharpened them but never replaced them. I don't use the jointer that often as there is seldom a need in the boats I built.

My ugly beat up thicknesser? Nakakahiya to be candid especially with bro Timber's spanking new Makita. In fact, I told my thicknesser while I was planing the 2x8, "Don't worry you have lots of spare parts" (I have 3 others in different states of disrepair).

Actually, it was the other way around. The space was empty, just grass, so I figured the biggest boat I could build (30 ft) and set my sights to eventually build one. Right now is "practice" :).
