Re: Shoe Cabinet - Small and simple plywood furniture.

sir, good day po. pwd po bang magtanong tungkol sa procedure pag finish ng plywood. bago lang po kasi ako and hirap mg finish ng plywood. anu po ba ang una. sanding sealer or stain. ang ginawa ko po kasi stain una then overnyt pg umaga ng sanding sealer ako then nagcoat po ng clear gloss lacquer. pero hndi po msyadong mganda ung finish. tpos ano po ibig sabihin ng 2 coats ng sanding sealer, after po mgdry nung sealer ng lagay ulit kayo ng sealer or alternate ung pg coat ng sealer at clear gloss. pxnxa n po dami tanong.thanks po sir.

@jeavons:

My regular procedure is something like this:

1. Sand the wood- sa umpisa 120 grit muna, then use 380 or 400 grit na sandpaper sa final sanding ng wood.

3. First coat of sanding sealer.
4. After mag dry ang first coat, sand using 400 grit. Option to stain uli para mag dark ang kulay.
5. 2nd coat nd Sanding sealer.
6. sand uli ng 400 grit pero very very light lang para di mapanot ang coat.
7. Clear top coat (option to have a 2nd topcoat)

I only use lacquer based coats para madali matuyo.

Re: Shoe Cabinet - Small and simple plywood furniture.

For plywood, after sanding the bare wood you need to close those malalalim na grain sa plywood.

Re: Shoe Cabinet - Small and simple plywood furniture.

I haven't seen or tried boysen's lacquer spot putty. Most putty is stainable naman, yes sanding sealer can be applied by brush, cloth, or by spray.

ok sir. thanks po ulit. ung wood putty, i assume, iaaply sya all over the plywood. so i think mcocover nito ung grain ng plywood. or magiging transparent or visible p rin p rin po ung grain?

yes after sanding lilitaw uli yung grain ng plywood so dapat manipis lang ang apply. Since beginner ka pa lang try mo yung mga waterbased wood filler like Timbermate or Pye madali kasing i-apply and madali rin controlin unlike lacquer base madali matuyo sa paleta and medyo messy ang pag apply..marami sa Wilcon or Ace

baka masyado makapal ang pahid mo natabunan pati surface ng plywood..you should thin it down with lacquer thinner. Now you should sand it thoroughly until mawala ang putty sa surface... Oil based tinting colors ang gamit ko..start with raw sienna and venetian red..just mix them to your thinned putty until you match the color of your wood.

Re: Shoe Cabinet - Small and simple plywood furniture.

hello sir. im trying and experimenting with the procedures that you suggested ill keep you posted. hinihintay ko lang yung paint sprayer ko dumating. so ngayon brush brush lang ako ng lahat ng applications sa wood. medyo hindi ko gusto yung finish ng brush. hindi pantay.

medyo struggle ako sa materials, mahirap kasi dito samin bumili ng woodworking items, yung mga hardware puro general construction supplies lang ang itinitinda medyo suplada pa ang mga tindera. di sila nag eentertain ng customer na tanong ng tanong. hehe. yung nearest citi hardware, ace hardware, and handy man 1 hour ride galing dito. ill see if i can buy the supplies this weekend. thanks a lot sir.

hi jeavons: its good that you have patience in experimenting the finishing procedure..same here bago ko ma-finalize mga procedure ko madaming failure rin muna sa mga boxes na ginawa ko..there's no shortcut to success talaga..

please take note that the procedure i shared with you is from my own experiment lang din and not necessarily the standard procedure of general furniture finishes. Lacquer based finishes is the quickest and most economical among that i have tested..but you will have to struggle talaga in the beginning.

When you make your lacquer putty, kelangan mo ma-achieve mo yung viscosity ng slime or condensed milk then add tinting color of your desired shade. What I do is I prepare a small mangkok and do the mixing there, then you need to work fast in applying the putty (now became filler).

But now, since medyo malalaki na ang plywood projects ko, i graduated na sa lacquer based putty coz im now using alkyd oil based wood filler but more complicated procedure.

My most desired wood filling procedure is to use waterbased wood filler (Timbermate or PYE) because madali i-apply, madulas and konte lang ang waste, being waterbased is water lang ang thinner, madali i-sand and madali kapitan ng stain...but...mahal nga lang.

not bad jaevons on your first plywood project, para mawala ang brush strokes i-sand mo pa using 200 grit then followed by 400 grit sandpaper..then sanding sealer uli bago mag clear gloss. Nice looking bookshelf.
