Re: Show your Quickie Quickie Projects

here is my quick and dirty yesterday and staining today...
Rony came over with several pcs of ladder boards from an old house... he wanted to know if it could be made into a simple bench...
I said yes and this is where I am now...

it is held together with a splined tenon joint...

then it gets some golden oak stain...

it doesn't need stretchers as it is solid...

Re: Show your Quickie Quickie Projects

the front, gorgeous piece...

the other piece goes into the same process, the cut to size, afterwhich the tenon gets cut as well as the mortises...

I cut the tenon in half to make room for expansion...

all that is left is gluing everything and making sure it stays in place. everything is tight, just like I like it.

Re: Show your Quickie Quickie Projects

that kamagong is really nice...did you even out the whole board? from the pics it would seem that you needed to take out lots of wood to get it flat.

I did take off a lot... it was good that I had my handplane blades sharp, took a while and elbow grease, but it turned out well.
the kamagong had several cracks, hence the clamps (trying to glue them to close and lock. I'm thinking of locking them with a bowtie (dutchman,.. whats the word). bukas naman siguro, but happy with the progress as it took 3-4 hours including the chisel work, which btw makes the Narex a staple in my shop. 😀 very happy with them...

Re: Show your Quickie Quickie Projects

@timb,

Won't the kamagong split more if you start making butterfly holes in it?

@docV,

Masaya mag handplane! You should get a scrub plane, makes roughing out stock a lot easier and quicker too..

no moji, hindi naman thru cut yung mortise for the butterfly. around 1/4" lang just to prevent it from growing...

that is correct Doc V. good blades and good handplanes will make you grow tired... jointer na 😀

Re: Show your Quickie Quickie Projects

i loooove planing actually but handplaning will put a strain on one's belly and that is definitely a no no now for my illness..

i miss the time when i was flattening the table top my workbench using the number 5..i wished i had the #7.

and yes its true with a sharp blade i can play with my plane all day long.

when i saw that hard kamagong, i immediately thought of a 6" jointer..sayang wala na stock combi thicknesser planer ang makita..yun na lang sana tinira ko.

pero i really dont need a jointer for now...

i am actually painting the ceiling and walls of my new woodshop...later to add the moulding...

wait and see!
