western red cedar for guitar tops

engelman spruce for tops

sinker redwood for guitar top. very special wood. it was harvested from a log that sank under a river and stayed there for almost 110 years, thus the color. it will be for my daughter's guitar

indian rosewood is used primarily on guitar making. i get mine from luthier shops and they are already cut to specs. not sure where you can get thick planks of it though.

he's a local luthier but based in spain. he has indian rosewood sets here that go about for 3,500php. i'll ask him first if its ok to give you his private number

the size are about 4inx33inx5mm
and 8inx25inx5mm

they're for guitar back and sides sets

Hi, is this the case also for western red cedar? What is locally available is only in the sizes intended for guitars as pictured?

Been on the lookout for western red cedar locally, small cross section (e.g., 1x2) for boat framing, but no luck so far. I read somewhere that kalantas or calantas is a good local substitute for WRC in terms of light weight and rot resistance? No idea though where to find this.

kalantas is an excellent substitute for cedar. its like spanish cedar IMO.

its hard to get good planks of it tho. when we encounter some we tend to get it hehehehe

Probably missed it (or forgot!). Are you also into boatbuilding, Guad?

Re: Show your wood stash 🙂

Missed it? where? Boat building? I suppose ... but the kind that you can lift with one hand.

Built the below in two days with help of my instructor. It's just a quick and dirty half-scale version of my target build, a traditional (Greenland) kayak, just to get the hang of it.

Actually, WRC or kalantas being hard to get locally could be a good thing. Forcing me to figure out how to adapt cheaper, more readily available materials...
