there's the diploma, narra, and acrylic still with the brown protective sticker

I decided to get my diploma today as well as request my transcript of records.... after 3.5 years! hahahaha the academe staff was like ???? bat ngayon mo lang kukunin?

I have left over strips of really red narra, i mean the picture does not show how red it really is. This was left over from my console table project.

I knew i saved these short strips of Meranti???? (its from a plank of RAMAGAL brand stair treads... its definitely NOT tanguile coz it smells different, abit pungent and HARDER than tanguile, i suspect malaysian meranti?)

I have dozens of these strips laying around, this saves me from making rabbets on the router table.

Re: simple frame for my diploma

Nice project. Looking forward to the next episode.

Some off-topic questions:

1. What is Meranti? In my boat project, the designer recommended meranti, sapele, and okumo plywoods. No idea what these woods are.

2. What brand of clamps are those? I have a lot of F-clamps and C-clamps. Found the plastic quick-clamps I have rather useless but I suspect I got cheapos.

Hi Ben, Nice to know you already got a copy of your diploma. Good luck on the project.

*As paranoid as it may sound, I'm not sure if it would be better if you blur some important info on your diploma. You know the bad things these days. Just a safety precaution.

Re: simple frame for my diploma

Balarila,

you know what, they are INDEED USELESS!

after 30 minutes of gluing i checked the status. i saw some spots void of glue. So i got my c-clamps and f-clamps and re-glued the pieces 🙁

Meranti is a wood specie from malaysia and or indonesia. They are of the Shorea sp specie of trees similar to tanguile (or Lauan as more popularly referred in the western countries)

Jarod,

I think its safe for me to leave the diploma pic as is. its just my name and my alma mater

I must be paranoid myself. I would have blurred stuff like that, too. Sometimes, what could seem so benign to us could be turned sinister by the mischievous mind. Sad world sometimes.

Here's a thought: Use photoshop and change your name to Brad Pitt or something like it.

Thanks for the info on Meranti. Wish we had different types of plywood. Come to think of it, I used to be able to buy Narra ply in my younger woodworking days. They seem to have disappeared.

Singular or plural, its "species" and not specie.

Re: simple frame for my diploma

ahhhhh hehe species pala. 🙂

I decided against using the splines since the frame is two laminated wood, if i were to put a spline in them i will have to cut in between the glue points of the laminated stocks,

Hence i decided to do something new, i will be using a dovetail key for the miter joints!!! with teak!

Re: simple frame for my diploma

actually my rt is one of my workhorses in the workshop

today i had an epic fail in making the butterfly dovetail key. I made 4 keys, then i transferred the dimension of one key to the miter joint by tracing. Then cut the trace lines. Then when i tried dry fittin the dovetail it wont fit for some reason. Then i found out my keys were out of plane!!! basta hindi pulido kaya hindi kumasya... jeeeez

So i decided that i needed more practice with a dovetail saw and that tonight WAS NOT the night to practice. hehehe so i decided to fill the dovetail key mortise with EPOXY instead.....

Will post photo tomorrow 🙂

Re: simple frame for my diploma

buwahahahaha! lazy mans butterfly dovetail key!!!

Thats epoxy, good thing epoxy is very easy to sand. The only complain i have is the color.

I shouldve dyed my epoxy first. But this will work for now.

Re: simple frame for my diploma

HAH!

it works! but my handsawing was done haphazardly... hence the not so pretty dovetail

finished with BLO, it actually looks reddish orange, but here it looks brownish. I like the grain.

obviously i got lazy at the back portion. The diploma is sandwiched by two acrylics that are held in place with duct tape hehehe

Re: simple frame for my diploma

haha!

with so many tools lying around...sometimes we feel lazy setting them up for a particular purpose..

like changing the stock TS blade to a stack dado ones.
