i started this project two weeks ago but photobucket and imageshack arent cooperating i was able to upload only two pics..

i have a piece of kd 1 x 12 x 12 red lauan and of course its planed on four sides...been wanting to make this drafting table or reading table at the bedside.

here is the first installment.

the table measures 16" deep and 22" long.

gluing up two boards for the desktop...the 2x2 legs and glue bottle on top to act as weight to flatten

to be continued....i do not know if i can still upload pics..maybe i will try flickr instead.

Re: small bedside drafting table

Bro I can't comprehend the 4100 setup ... is it on a new stand ... is that a blue dust port I see ... does it have a new safety switch ... does it have extensions now ???? LOL.

Re: small bedside drafting table

@Jay,

all your observations are correct.
the 4100 is sitting on the table suited for my height I made a long time ago..now with rear and left side extensions...the blue pvc pipe is the extension of the redirected blade dust port.
i installed a panic switch and it is in series with the vacuum.

the vacuum can only be turned on by the TS switch..a hassle when i use the RT.

i cannot accomodate another vacuum in my small woodshop.

mist of fine dust is another problem which i need to address.

air filtration is the way to go perhaps.

Re: small bedside drafting table

Going real good V. Looks like you have enhanced further the functionality of the saw. I could see the taller fence too.

:thanks:

Re: small bedside drafting table

the four legs were fastened not by tenons but by pocket hole screws.
two 1/4" inch thick narra ply served as bottom shelf supported by braces underneath glued to the sides.
here clamps are keeping the molding which will hide the gaps.

Re: small bedside drafting table

shelf in place and made up of two 1/4 inch thick narra ply with two coats of sanding sealer...edge trimming installed, glued and clamped.

with everything sanded smooth..time to apply the stain..i am using red mahogany by Ace paints...just left over from previous projects.

using a gauze to apply stain..the reason why i use gauze instead of a brush is the speed of application.little mess in application and you get consistent hues throughout..brushing and "flooding" the wood with brush is a messy thing for me...coz stain is very viscous much like the liquidity of water..

do not forget to make use of nitrile gloves! they are perfect for this application.
natural rubber gets destroyed easily by oil based stains and the like..you can even reuse these type of disposable gloves!

to be continued...

Re: small bedside drafting table

this is my favorite sealer.

except for the fruity/acetoney smell.

warning: too much inhalation of highly evaporating lacquer can cause gastrointestinal problems..diarrhea is always the side effect of too much vapors inhaled..second is neurologic effects..such as dizziness...

besides this lacquers are flammable.

Re: small bedside drafting table

applying sanding sealer with a brush

even long strokes

use fan to divert the fumes and wear mask

second coat of sealer.. sanding in between using 600 grit paper..here is the first coat of spray on water based poly..looking good

orbital sander marks gone! (see above photo)
