I'm currently looking for a good plane. I already have the stanley block plane but realized I needed a bigger one as I've tried borrowing from a friend (stanley #4).

I saw these two planes in ACE Hardware and from the looks, they look almost the same except the other one is a little bit longer (forgot which one). The price difference is almost 500 pesos.

I would like to ask you guys what is the difference or pros and cons of buying these planes?

Pikit mata ko na lang bibilhin ang Bailey kung mas maganda talaga sya dun sa isa pero kung hindi, why spend additional 500 pesos kung same lang naman ang Bailey at yung #4..

sorry kung di maganda pakakapicture..

Re: Stanley Hand Plane - What is the difference?

Stanley has planes from #1- 100+ each has its own purpose. A #4 is considered a smoothing plane, for smoothing. A #7 or #8 (22-24") is called jointing planes A #5 is called Jack plane because its in between smoothing planes and jointing planes.

A #5 would be a good addition to a block plane.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Thanks bigfoot. I was also thinking about getting a jack plane. I'm still looking at the options as I'm really planning to invest on this.
