first time poster po dito, hope you don't mind me asking some questions.
thanks

Re: tabletop top coat

I also bought dining set made of malaysian wood 2 yrs ago. What I did was apply 3 coats of polyurethane varnish, sanding with 320 grit after each coat dried to even out the surface. It produce a glossy finish and serves as waterproofing so that the wood will last longer. HTH

I would recommend water based poly, that way you don't affect whatever finish is in the table and will not react with the old finish. Sanding and the like must be done to ensure good bond...
It would also be nice if you could introduce yourself....

Re: tabletop top coat

hi again.
to introduce myself, i am a frustrated DIYer heheh, due mainly to lack of funds and lack of space to do things i like to build. also dati nag scratchbuild ako ng mga rc boats using balsa, plywood, cardboard or fiberglass, but lately hindi na masyado kasi wala na time and space.
now back to my question.
pag PU ba gamitin ko may posibility na masira yung original finish? what is the best posible finish i can have (i actually wanted something like a mirror finish) but i wanted to do it inside the house and posibly use cloth instead of brush or spray. i went to ace the other day, they have a waterbase varnish, will that work? or is there other better and cheaper alternative.
thanks!

Water based poly is polyurethane also, water based nga lang unlike most which are oil based. Meaning and thinner mo would be water. It has minimal odor unlike oil based, unfortunately mahirap sya gamitin without a spraygun outfit. It comes in several finish but gloss with fit your needs best.
