Re: timber's second workbench

will sell it to you 😀 hehehe, seriously, it stays at home. I sometimes feel bad when I do not have handplanes at home, imagine if I don't even have a workbench... that would just be unbearably sad... :p:p

See! You should have gotten that stanley 6 and left another plane for home use! Now you have reason to buy more handplanes 😉

Hey guys, so sorry for the ignorance, ask ko lang, what are " DOG HOLES " and what are they for in your work benches? These round or square holes on your tables intrigues me.

I'm no wood worker that's why I'm asking the expert so to speak, to learn from you guys.

Thanks in advance for your enlightenment.

I forgot who gave the link to a pdf of scott landis's book but whoever you are, thanks a lot! What a great read, something you'll go back to again and again, very entertaining too. If only shipping wasn't a killer i'd get a book for my collection.

Let me take a stab (para naman may pakinabang ako dito sa site).

Dog holes are where you insert dogs. Dogs (not canine in woodworking) are the pegs you jam into the holes to act as a stop usually for planing. For example, if you want to plane a piece of lumber, you put one end against a dog then a screw vise (also with a dog on it) to tighten and eventually hold down the lumber at both ends to make it rigid for planing.

Dogs (and dog holes) can be vertical or horizontal. Horizontal dogs are useful for propping up wood, usually used with a front vise.

No, I did not wikipedia this. Just something I learned along the way so please someone correct me if amiss.

Re: timber's second workbench

Thanks again bro, that's an additional knowledge again for me sa field ng wood working.

-------------------------------------
Hey bro, in your thread on mortise and tenon, I posted also an inquiry of some sort, maybe you could enlighten me too regarding that thread.
Thanks again.

Re: timber's second workbench

Is there a place to buy workbench or for that matter project wood wherein checking the wood for straightness / warping is not a problem anymore. The lumbers here in Pasay have a lot of wood but you have to dig out one by one to get the straight / good ones. Very annoying and for this reason I dread going there to buy wood.

Re: timber's second workbench

I live in Antipolo and there are two hardware/lumber (Antipolo and Angono) I go to that allow me to go to the back to select the wood I want. I always go with gloves on and work clothes. It's a tough chore but, to make it easier, I pretend to be a chef in the smelly wet market selecting the freshest prime catch for my culinary masterpieces. 😎

Re: timber's second workbench

although he was interested in the calendar girl, he did help me a lot cutting the leg tenons and glue-up of the feet. we even got to dry-fit the leg assembly.

then with a jig saw I cut the feet profile.

cutting 3 5/8" thick feet assembly and it still came out square (not straight line though)

I then got the feet milled to size and cut the profile for the curve.
