Hi mga master, new into wood working lang. Nagtry ako magputol ng kahoy and nadisappoint lang ako kc yung mga putol ko hindi squared. Haha. Siguro ganun nga talaga pag starter. Hirap pala. You need skills cutting properly. Hehe. Anyway, dagdag experience. Pero I would appreciate kung may tips kayo. 🙂

La pa budget s mga power tools at Ipon pa para s circular saw. For now handtools na muna. Pag medyo confident na ako bibili na ako power tools paisa-isa. Hehe.

Thanks in advance! 😉

Ciao!

Wahoo is right, for a hand saw, it needs some sharp teeth (talim) to be able to cut your wood properly and squarely. That could be done on plywood or plyboards too, kaya lang medyo matagal at nakaka pagod. Save up some money and invest on a good circular saw, it will make your cuttings fast and 100% accurately squared.

Agree to both, you need a good tool to cut dead square either power or hand tools. I have both but I seldom use my CS saw, I prefer the old fashioned way, less dust, less noise, and more finger! IMHO there's not a cut that a handsaw cannot do except speed. The tool can only cut accurate if the operator knows how to do it correctly otherwise it's just a tool. I can cut dead square using my saw (stay away from those cheap saws if you want to cut accurate) with the proper tool to help my cut, these are square's (Combination or fixed) and a knife... yes a knife. I use what we can knife wall method. You can look this up on Youtube, it's so effective given that you're sawing ability and your saw is good.

To add to the confusion, there are two types of saw for the job, a rip cut saw and a crosscut saw, each one have their own cutting ability to maximize it's potential. Rip cut is effective cutting with the grain and crosscut for across the grain. You can rip a wood using a crosscut or vise versa, however, using a ripsaw to rip a wood is faster than crosscut saw will do, you will be amazed how easy it is to saw with the right one.

and, Thanks for all the tips. I unfortunately haven't had the time to resume my woodworking because of the weather. But I'll definetely try to better my cutting skills but at the same time save for a circular saw. Hehe. Anyway, i have a crosscut saw i bought some time ago and a backsaw. Never knew i needed a ripsaw, im not sure i my lolo's saw was of that type. I'll check that out. Thank you guys! 🙂

i certainly agree with the tips posted above and i would just like to add some notes based on experience:
1. it is difficult to cut wet wood or at least a wood that has more moisture in it
2. soft woods like Pine wood needs a saw with small, numerous and sharp teeth...(saws are categorized also by the number of teeth per inch...if more than 5 teeth per inch then it can be a good crosscut saw...less than that with tall teeth (deep gullets) then its good as a ripsaw...a saw with teeth that is less then perfect can cut just fine in solid hardwood like mahogany but of course, it is better to have a sharp teethed saw for every sawing chores...but if you like to make more muscle, a saw with dull tooth is recommended. LOL
3. you need to invest in buying a cheap plastic 90 degree plastic triangle..the smallest and cheapest you can find at your favorite school supply store will do just fine. i also suggest you buy a mechanical pencil..these pencils abound...20 pesos cheap will do...to save you on sharpening your mongols...but i prefer the 0.7 mechanical pencil..mind also that graphite refills are also differently made..some darker and some lighter..ask the saleslady...your regular pencil initially can produce a sharp line but eventually will produce a thicker line resulting to stocks a little less or more than a millimeter from the others
4. if you cut a piece of wood say 2 x 2, make a 90 line on one side (the top side) and another line (exactly aligned with the first line made on the top) in front of you and this will be your guide to produce a square stock...
5. buy a good tape measure..if you are going to buy a cheap one, buy two..if you use different brands, the quality may not be the same..this produces again error in cutting..one brand maybe off of 0.1mm with the other and error can be multiplied.
6. i never learned to sharpen my saws..either i lend them to my neighbors (and never expect to return) or keep them as mementos...i stil have in fact a saw that is made by Sandvik and is teflon coated...easy on sawing even in wood with more moisture in it...so i suggest you wax your saw (wax?--i use plexon wax...also made by Johnson and Johnson but cheaper)...i am a cheapskate you know!
7. do not do sawing chores when you are tired. try to do woodworking early in the morning and make sure you take a bath and eaten your breakfast..
8. i am planning to make a coffeetable book on simple woodworking and these notes (from number 1 to 7) will be found in page 15...my book ends on page 20 btw.
9. if you will learn this hobby and no one is pressuring you to make this and that for a limited time, then i recommend you dont buy yet a circular saw...learn it the hardway...the japanese still does some painstaking hardwork in woodworking...i really admire them...
10. have you heard of the "unplugged workshop"? where these nuts hated power tools to do their woodworking? and yet they produce pieces that are work of art...ala George Nakashima style (google mo nalang si Sir George)
11. last but not least..i find people who were first timers to use only the "middle" portion of the saw...use the whole length of it!
12. last na talaga..............enjoy your sweet sweat from your labour of love of sawing.
13. super last...i trust these brands only...if you can find them: Bahco, Sandvik...(Stanley is long dead to me).

nice tips. I like most the #3 and #5. I'm using a mongol and always sharpen it but a mechanical pencil is much better I think I will buy one tomorrow. For #13, I buy some Stanley handtools but NOT powertools as I am somewhat loyal to bosch... can you give some details why Stanley is long dead to you?

Stanley Try squares arent square anymore, their hand planes now sport cheap plastic knobs and blade adjusters which are of poor taste and flimsy and etc etc etc...in short they are cheaply manfactured unlike the ones sold in the 70s and 80s which are still made elsewhere and where people value quality. I doubt if their handplane blades are still made in Sheffield (UK)...
and now to even frustrate me, they ordered power tools from God knows where in China and rebadge these with their re designed name brand.
that to me is soooooooooooooooo cheap!
i am not talking about the Fatmax line of tools of Stanley US...long gone is the name Stanley..it is simply not the same. Thanks to the tool Gods i still have a few of their quality hand tools.
Stanley is dead.

Balak ko gumawa nalang kasi kahit simple lang.
