Hi fellow PHMs,
I need help on how to finish our ceiling. Our house is almost 40 years old, and it was never finished(no paint or varnish, plain concrete and wood). I'm trying to do it one at a time. Right now I'm planning to do the ceiling, its around 5meters X 13 meters, and 12feet high. It's all wood, I just don't know what kind. here are some pics;

All suggestions are welcome, free manpower will also help.hehehe... TIA guys.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

WOW bee, nice ceiling ha, puro T & G yata yan, buti hindi binukbok or inanay all these years. 😮

Anyway this is my personal say to your inquiry ha, first of all I will resand the ceiling one by one with a fine finishing sander, really patience lang talaga kailangan dyan, then I will apply SOLIGNUM clear to make sure malason any signs of wood infestations, let dry for a couple of days before resanding lightly then start applying the desired color wood stain, let dry and then resand again lightly for the second coating after which I'll start applying VALSPAR varnish or Poly, pa spray or brush application. :p 😉

The ZAR brand of varnish can be applied by brush or cloth.

Hope this helps beedigo, good luck on the project. 🙂
Medyo malaking trbaho yan bro, tyagaan lang kailangan mo dyan.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

i hate ceiling work but its always been a challenge especiailly while having a stiffed neck!

but its the ceiling that will command space and grande to any living room.

its a quite a big area you have there bro.

i also do not know what kind of wood species you have in the ceiling..maybe a closer shot will do.

some planks have water seepage marks..i guess you need to check the roof first before doing anything on that all wood ceiling.

ok..after my tummy operation i will lend a hand eh!

i went back to the pictures..maybe its just an illusion and just part of the wood grain.

what rosy was telling you is to rent another house while you do the transformation.

ala kayang nakatagong kayamanan sa ibabaw nyan bro?

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

Thanks bro rosy, Buti nga di nagka infestation.
I don't think I will have the patience and time to sand finish this 5 X 13meters 12foot high ceiling, pwede ba wala nang sanding?

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

at 12 ft high, maybe you can get away with no sanding. 🙂

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

bee, if you'll ask me, e papagandahin mo na nga e, e do it right na and properly para polido ang trabajo, who knows baka manahin mo bahay nyo or ipa mana mo rin yan sa mga anak mo when the time comes.

Isang treasure na yan bro. But still here ikaw pa rin ang mag di decide what you really want and intend with your ceiling make over. Its your call, not ours, ok bro.

Bro my ceiling height is 15 or 18 feet yata so I fabricated my own metal scaffolding, 15 feet total height, collapsible with removeable casters, e kung malapit ka lang dito sa place namin e pinahiram muna kita nito.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

@ violane
yes doc, those are water seepage marks several years ago, roof was fixed already. I'll try to put up a ladder so that I can make close up shots later. Mukhang out of the question din ang renting, so I'll have to finish these while my family is here.

@ rosy

@ joey81
Wow, maganda yung shellac, kaya ba lahat to ni sir Jarod? 😀

@bigfoot2
Right now I'm leaning on the no sanding, medyo matagal talaga matapos kung i-sand pa, pero still weighing options pa ko.

@rosy
I really would like to do it right. My parents are both gone already, and this house was left to me 'coz I'm the youngest child. Sigurado if this will be kept and maintain right ipapamana ko rin ito sa anak ko.

@beedigo and joey81:

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

BLO bro, dry then apply the finish of your choice, satin, gloss or semi gloss poly, ...

or you can apply directly the poly finish or spar varnish ( or any varnish ) para tipid...

i suggest 2 coats, since pinakamahirap sa lahat ang mag finishing ng kesame...

no more sanding na, baka nangangalahati ka pa lang e umayaw ka na...

kung ayaw mo mag sand, wipe it na lang ng damp cloth to clean the wood surface then fire away the finish once dried....

maraming option brad, you can paint it, any color,

@jonathan,
Yes I was thinking of BLO, a friend mentioned it to me one time. how do you apply it and how long does it take to dry? What poly brand can you suggest? TIA
