Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

OK, thanks timber for the correction but I should have said SADOLIN wood oil and wood stain. Based my reaction on the sample pics " HERE " that JAROD replied for BEEDIGO. I saw cans of wood oil and wood stain as well. I guess the price of 2K is only for the wood oil.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

I think you can, maybe light sanding at the most. Nobody's going to touch your ceiling anyway, unless there is VERY visible tearouts/defects. At 12 ft high, you got a lot of leeway.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

@violane,
Thanks for the actual pic Doc, now I know what to look for.

Will 2 gallons of oil and poly be enough for the 5 x 13meters ceiling?

mabango naman yung sadolin oil eh..tsaka me water based poly na din...less odour...

pero kahit papano ceiling pa din yan..hehe...parang sistine chapel pa din.

daunting task especially for me nowadays..hay slowly losing my youth.

goodluck and do post your work in progress ok?

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

@violane,
Thanks for the info Doc. I'm planning to use cotton cloth instead of brush to apply the oil, and then brush for the poly.
I'll post pics once the work is in progress.

Do you have an idea of the cost of water-based poly per gallon?
By the way, do i still have to apply Solignum or does the Sandolin oil have anti infestation property?

Don't worry Doc, you're not alone, most of us (including myself) are slowly losing our youth. Let's just hope that with every part of our youth that we lose, we also gain wisdom in life.

SADOLIN HAS A PRODUCT CALLED "SADOKIL" DESIGNED FOR INFESTATION ISSUES. IF YOU CAN GET A HOLD OF THIS PRODUCT IT WILL REALLY HELP IN YOUR WOOD PRESERVATION CONCERN.

LETS JUST HOPE YOUTH IS THE ONLY PART THAT WE LOSE AND THAT HAIR LOSS IS NOT A SIGN OF INCREASING WISDOM. HEHEHE.....:old::yoda1: (JOKE)

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

@beedigo,

a gallon of water based poly (Ace) should be around 1k to 1.2K..max is 1.5K...sure i see them on ace hardware's shelves but i still have a few of these newer polys on spray can.

i believe cloth will be better than brush for the oil but below are the things i am not sure of..
1. oil + water based poly=? (adhesion???)
2. oil dries too long--> will you wait for it to dry to apply the poly?
3. that deep penetrating oil in itself is a finish..why still apply a poly?..just renew the coat every other year if work and time permits...imho...if you just want the sheen then go straight to poly..self priming naman siya...if you will apply clear lacquer before the poly..then brace yourself for the noxious fumes.

a disadvantage of just the sadolin is..it becomes an insect and dust magnet.

@willy,

on a recent trip to the bathroom i spotted a gray hair on my sideburns!
double agh!

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

I recently took advantage of the 3-day weekend break and got some materials for my ceiling finishing project...

This two alone already cost me more than 5K.:cry2:

Re: Wood Ceiling Finishing

I was having a hardtime applying the hardwood oil with a brush so I just used a piece of cotton cloth. I can't control the dripping on the floor while I was using the brush, and application was made even more tiring because I didn't have scaffolding, I only used a ladder.

Here again are the bare ceiling pics before...

Then after applying Sandolin hardwood oil...

Will post update pics later.
