good day mga boss! i am a new member of this site, it's a good thing that i found this site. looks like i will be learning a lot from here. i am into woodworking just for a hobby, i like DIY's rather than hiring someone to do it for me, it is quite satisfying seeing your craft after the hard work.
i have a few power tools like jigsaw, power drill and a sander but for cutting i only use a handsaw, kaya mejo nag struggle ako when it comes precise straight cuts, i wanted to invest sa mga tools since mabilis tlaga magtrabaho pag kumpleto ang gamit.
i am currently customizing the trunk of my sedan for the subs and sa mga enclosures inside it, my only prob is the sub box, kelangan kasi air tight di ba, so i really need precise cuts, my question po ay,
1. meron po bang mga woodshops nag nag ooffer ng cutting lang?
im in quezon city near sm north. nag tanong ako minsan sa woodshop malapit dito sa amin, ang quote nila is 500 pesos just for cutting, ang ipapa cut ko lang nman is the four sides of the sub box which is about (2ft W x 1.5ft H front and back) and the sides would be about approx 1ft. W&H. i will do the holes already since the jigsaw could take care of it already.
2. ganun po ba talga ang pricing sa pagpapacut lang ng board? by the way i am using MDF
need your advice and suggestions mga boss. sensya na sa nobela. hehe
inputs are highly appreciated, thanks in advance.
Re: wood cutting service need advice
Why not cut it yourself using the jigsaw and a straight guide? And then use silicone sealant (pwede rin vulca-seal) to make it airtight?
Re: wood cutting service need advice
hey bro...
makapaghihintay ba yung subs mo? pwede naman yata maghintay yun...
kaw na lang gumawa at magcut..
of course id shy away using the jigsaw to cut the mdf..sabi mo "precise" kasi..medo imprecise ang cut ng jigsaw kasi... saka it wanders kahit pa me straight guide.
sa palagay ko...thats the way to go...gastahin mo na si 15th month pay mo!
:soda:
500pesos???para sa akin ok na yun..namahal na kuryente, carbide blades at yung tools...plus yung dust galing sa mdf na me kaunting formaldehyde...formalin lang naman yun..anu ba masama dun...:director:

Re: wood cutting service need advice
MDF material is tough on the saw, even if you use say a table saw the board takes its toll on the blade. im not going to say mahal or mura yung charge but as yourself if you would cut it yourself for 500 pesos. maybe you would maybe you wont, the thing is if you ask others to do it for you, not only will you be paying for the work done but also consider the wear and tear sa tools nila. plus bottom line is there should be ample amount left for them ( worker) at the end of the day. after all thats business. the question now is how badly do u need the cuts to be precise to make it worth the 500 pesos they are asking.

Re: wood cutting service need advice
kung subs lang ang plan mong gawin na accurate straight cuts get a cheap circular saw, you can probably get a few more straight cuts with it after. but if you plan to do other things in the future invest on good tools.
If kasi you can make a sub out of mdf, you will like to make other things out of wood. So like Doc Violaine suggested, invest on a circular saw....

Re: wood cutting service need advice
Wow, thanks for the inputs guys, actually i've thought of using the jigsaw sana but i am quite hesitant kasi as per violane na din, jigsaw wanders kahit may guide minsan. pero i am actually considering on buying a circ saw kasi bukod sa magagamit ko pa in the future, good investment na din. it is not really urgent since i am only doing this wnen/if i have a free time.
i really dont have any idea about sa cutting services sa mga shops and i thought at first that it's quite expensive, but since you have pointed out some of the reasons why, then maybe it is just fair. hehe, pwede ko nman sana pagawa nalang yung box pero mas masarap pa din ang sariling gawa e, nag eenjoy ako sa pag papanday, so to speak.
pointers naman po to consider when buying a circular saw, is ryobi brand good? durabilty & quality?
salamat ulet mga boss. it feels good to be here, para sa dagdag kaalaman.
Re: wood cutting service need advice
you are most welcome bro.
pero me mga bagay bagay na you have to accept using the circular saw.
yes it can cut true 90 degrees and quickly..but there are two things id like to point out which i hate the most..
-they spew dusts...yes dusts
-they are noisy...close to 100db siguro in action
if you can live with that then..there are expensive cs with dedicated dust port and are less noisy..
i am still dreaming to have these type of cs..
i have been wanting a Makita with dust shroud (for fiber cement boards kasi sha) pero grabeh mahal...ok lang sana kaso its 7 kg! ayaw ko naman ng sobrang bigat..
in fact i want a cs now with these specs (just to cut sheet goods):
1. 5 1/2" diameter saw blade..its means small lang sha...lightweight.
2. dust port for vacuum attachment
3. at least not as noisy as my current cs.
4. battery operated at least 18V lithium ion
pag me ryobi surplus kang nakitang ganyan for less than 1.5K, eh pagtyagaan mo na muna.

Re: wood cutting service need advice
@Mikel,
Pag may way ka sa area ko (Project 4) you can bring your MDF. I will cut it for you.
Ice cold beer in can is enough for me.
Re: wood cutting service need advice
My circ saw is a Maktec. That's the cheap line of Makita. Works good enough for me. I have a straight guide track improvised from a 3/4inch aluminum C channel and plywood so straight cuts are not a problem. Most often, I use the circsaw for rough cutting. More accurate cuts are done on my table saw.
If price is a concern, you can probably make do with a Ryobi, just don't push it too hard as many (not all) of them run on 50Hz so there's a risk you'll be running them at a load they are not designed for. One step up, and more expensive would be my Maktec. Finally you can plunge into the good stuff, e.g. Makita and Bosch.
On tools, a usual guideline is buy as much as you can afford. Many times, you get what you pay for.

Re: wood cutting service need advice
Most have already given the best pieces of advise so I'll touch the other things left:
1) 500 peso-worth of cutting would be practical in short term if time is of the essence. From my experience, most shops that does cutting (tistisan) have either unsharpened/low tooth count blade that produces rough cuts on than expected. Just make sure they could handle MDF, otherwise you'll just waste the labor fee, MDF and spending more in the end.
2) Research, try, observe and modify your jigsaw/cutting skills. You may just be doing it wrong in technique (like pushing too hard), wrong/blunt blade, wrong blade attachment, skewed/"paling" blade adjustment, etc. You may try on a few scraps jut to test and you may be surprised how it would improve if you just correct whatever you're doing wrong. In the end you don't get to spend on anything at all.
3) Buy some ice cold beer and it will get you a professionally cut MDF, experience to use another tool, know how to make MDF creations and gain a new friend. This I think is not the least expensive but the most rewarding I believe.
Sometimes, it's more of usage error than tool need. Always try the least expensive choice first. Hope this helps you some.

Re: wood cutting service need advice
very well said mga bros, many thanks for the pointers. di ko na kayo isa isahin since all of you guys have been helpful enough.
anyway, i will consider every pointers that you have given me, but definitely i will be buying a circ saw. as to when? maybe before Christmas so that i can start working on my project during the holidays.
@bryant77
thanks sa offer bro, if i only have time to go to your shop... kahit sang case pa, para saluhan na kita, hehehe. pero since I made up my mind to buy a circ saw, i will just do it myself bro, para mahasa namn ang skills ko, hehehe.
I am really eying on ryobi since the price is relatively cheaper than the others, that's why i asked if this is a good brand. actually i have seen one of those that bro vilolaine has mentioned above, batery operated circ saw, 1.9k second hand, but i don't know about the condition yet, nkita ko lang sya sa sulit. sa brand new pa din ako...
I will try to look for the maktec, i haven't seen one of this kind yet. parang walang ganito sa mga malls, not even in home depot, balintawak.
update ko kayo whatever comes up.
my time does not let me yet to roam around this forum to get some good stuffs for skill enhancement, hopefully during the holidays i would be able to visit more.
Re: wood cutting service need advice
Punta ka sa T. Alonzo Street sa Binondo area. Maraming tool stores dun. Malaki ang kamurahan versus mall prices.
Punta ka na rin sa Panda, may 10% discount ang PHM members dun until Dec. 31. But before you go there siguraduhin mong meron kang pangontra sa kulam. 😀
Re: wood cutting service need advice
bro san yung Panda? sensya na di pa ako masyado familiar sa mga where to places for power tools.
pangontra sa kulam? hmmm.... :dunno: wala yata ako nun ah. hahaha
