Guys,
What is the best wood for a butcher block or sangkalan? Balak kong gumawa ng [another] kitchen island this time mas malaki na than before [ http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=1816 ].
Plano ko din na meron itong incorporated but removable sangkalan para madaling linisin.
Considerations are syempre food safe pati manner ng pag finish nito.
Maraming Salamat.

Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
Maybe yakal is a good choice, considering its easy to acquire and also resistant to moisture damage.
Make sure na yung end-grain ang cutting surface para mas matagal ang buhay ng sangkalan mo.

No problemo.
I don't think you can find yakal in the same dimensions as the tamarind chopping boards.
Here's how to make your own end-grain chopping board from the "regular cut" lumber:

Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
Thanks for the tip and link joey81... I have around a dozen pieces of 2" x 2" [more or less] x 12" narra - pinagtabasan ng stair steps, maybe I can use this, what you think?
Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
pag narra kasi, me chance mag bleed yung wood..and of course me gum/resin sha..but i saw narra planks being manufactured for chopping boards....sold at SM dept stores before..shaped like a pingpong paddle.
iba kasi pag butcher blocks..end grain.
i would recommend the titebond glue II or better titebond III for gluing the edges..
next is to soak it in mineral oil..i.e. must be food grade.
TIP:
making the butcher block is no easy task..you need to have a jointer..this will make the planks 90 degrees all the time before edge jointing..then rip them via the table saw...the CS? but we are talking about consistent cuts here.

Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
we use maple from formaply....matigas at maputi pa...sampaloc din maganda kasi me patterns just like our cue...btw we use these 2 woods din sa mga cues na ginagawa namin...

salamat violaine at ron 🙂
Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
update po... experiment phase... 1" x 8" x 16" solid narra, sanded and smothered with olive oil... ang mga nabasa ko kasi all points out na dapat food grade ang finish ng chooping board... balak ko sand then olive oil, mga 3 cycles, 1 cycle per day... ano po sa tingin nyo?
as i said, experiment ito... comments are welcome 🙂
Re: wood for butcher block / sangkalan
I just finished making an endgrain chopping board specifically for onions (kasi maliit lang, tinamad kasi ako)...
made of mahogany, kamagong and maple...
I used mineral oil from the drugstores. I have read somewhere that olive oil (my initial choice of finish as well) does have a tendency of getting rancid thus will have a smell... :poke:

Ganda!
Nakakapanghinayang gamitin ang chopping board na yan. I display ko na lang sa kitchen.
