NOW to answer your query, for your wooden door, there will still be some preps needed ahead before applying stain or paint. Sand your door to a fine and smooth finish, wipe clean then brush on several coats of an anti termite solution to preserve your door, let it dry completely for a few days, you can use Solignum Clear wood preservative. Then you can apply Boysen sanding sealer on the entire door. Usually for wooden doors staining and varnishing the surface is the usual practice but if you prefer painting and concealing the wood, you can opt for an enamel paint whether flat coat, semi gloss of totally gloss looking. Since you prefer to use water base paint, apply first a coat or two of flat latex paint then let dry completely. Before you apply your preferred topcoat, do sand again your door to achieve a fine and smooth surface, wipe it clean removing paint dust then you can now apply your final coating or finished coating. May I suggest you use a gloss type of latex paint to achieve a very nice looking finish plus the gloss type paint includes polymer solution which also helps prevent water from penetrating the paint and ruining the wood surface.

And for your stairs, follow the same procedure of preparation but usually stairs are not painted but stained and applied with polyurethane varnish to preserve the wooden surface.

Agree with Sir Rosy regarding the stairs.

Ganun ang ginawa ko sa stairs namin pero may I add na medyo matagal ang drying time ng polyurethane. Allow mga 24 hours para pwede na sya tapakan.

On the stairs, a usual technique is to paint alternate steps first, then, when dry, paint the other set. For example, if you will number your steps 1, 2, 3, 4..., paint the odd number steps first. Then, when dry, paint the even number steps. That way, you can still use the stairs even while waiting for paint to dry.

Put a marker (post-it or masking tape) on the banister of the wet step to remind people not to step on it.

On stain, sanding sealer, and top-coat (e.g. polyurethane), it is always best to buy the same brand so you are sure they're all compatible.

For no. 1, after all the preps have been done (sanding with different grade of sandpaper, dusting off and applying an anti termite and wood borer chemical sol) , simply brush on your sanding sealer two or three times times ( my personal preference ), drying each coat before the next application, then let dry completely for a few days before applying the preferred wood stain, and again drying the wood completely and finally brush on or spray the polyurethane with again several coats, letting it dry completely before each new coating is applied.

For no. 2, You can stick with the Boysen brand of wood stain, sanding sealer and polyurethane for consistency.

For no. 3, , YES !!

For no. 4,, If you will sand it up to the bare wood, you may but if not then you can sand the existing paint lightly to remove the gloss coating and even out the surface then you can apply now your preferred color of enamel, by brush, roller or spray painting if you have a compressor and some spray kit.

ack! i applied sanding sealer first on a new bare door before i thought of applying termite protection first. can i still use solignum even with a layer of SS? thanks.

Yes bro you can still do that but make sure its the Solignum clear that you use if you will decide to use wood stain and then poly on your door for its top coat finish.

May minana po kaming crib para sa baby namin, ito po ay yari sa palochina, mejo May kalumaan na po at may pingas at gasgas na. Ano po ang dapat kong gawin para marestore po ang crib? Gamitan mo ng sandpaper ang wooden crib mo para maging mas madulas at malinis
ang surface after which punasan ng medyo basang trapo para maalis ang dust.

You can use an oddorless non toxic and non lead paint kun gusto mong maputi o
medyo may kulay ang crib. Davies paint yata ang brand ng pintura at yung oddorless.
Be sure to ask the hardware seller about the paint you will bye or do some researching,
google it for additional information.

Hi Folks,

Good day! I would like to seek your expert advise.
I have currently initiated to re-finish our doors. The doors are previously varnished in semi-natural shade and I would like to stain them to a very dark, almost black, wenge shade.

Bought Bronco Oil Stain (Walnut Brown).

Here's what I did

1. Sanded down the door using a finishing sander with #150 grit (did not remove the previous grain)
2. Fill in cracks with Wood doo wood filler
3. Waited till the filler dried before sanding these to a smooth finish
4. Wiped it clean
5. Dip old t-shirt into Bronco and started rubbing it against the door (along its grain)

My concerns are as follows:
- The shade is not getting any darker
- The stain does not seem to be adhering to the wood, looks oily to touch

Am I missing something here?

Appreciate if I can hear your thoughts as well as outline the steps to finish the project.
I would appreciate if you can enumerate the things I need to buy as well.

If I remove the original finish, what should I use to repaint it? I've seen some guitar painting tutorials on youtube but guys there don't really know what are they doing.
