Re: please help me....

Ethylene glycol (engine coolant/antifreeze)? Is there any talk/feedback among cue builders on EG? Related to propylene glycol (PG) but not to be confused with polyethylene glycol (PEG). If you do try it, would be interested to know results.

Freeze Wood Motion with Antifreeze

Related: Chemotherapy for Rot

I started to use EG (with and without boric acid/borax, as well as boric acid/borax alone) but as wood preservative (insecticide/fungicide) not stabilizer (yet). No long term results but seems to work so far.

Best price I found so far is Springfields brand of concentrated coolant, P189.75/L at Ace. Anyone know a lower price per liter? Compare with Solignum cost, not to mention toxicity.

How do use this? Is it in powder form?

See the Chemotherapy for Rot article for the recipes (at the end). Options:
Borates in water
Borates in EG
EG only

I suspect that the proportions are not so critical. For the borates in EG option, I would lighten up on the borates, as they tend to crystallize out of solution if the unused mixture is stored for a long time (weeks or months), requiring reheating to dissolve.

Application: Brush on or soak. (For bamboo, I think soak is better, including and especially on the inside side.) Dry before applying any finish. If the wood is already finished, according to the above article, EG can penetrate existing paint/varnish/oil finish (but not epoxy or polyurethane) without damaging them.

Boric acid and borax are available in powder form. I got from Alysons' Chemicals on G. Araneta Ave., QC, about P60-90/kg before.

Only toxicity issue of EG is that it is poisonous if swallowed. Danger is that children/animals may drink or lick it (supposedly it is sweet) before it has dried.
