Re: Boring bit

You might want to look at the KCT brand spade bit set. 399 pesos at DIY Shop. The biggest diameter is 32mm. Comes with a 12" shank extender, which has two set screws to secure the bit.

Very poor quality spade bits. Don't know if it gets dull easily or it wasn't even sharp from the start. I haven't tried sharpening them yet.

Maybe the shank extender can be used with a better quality spade bit. I haven't used it yet, its still in the blister pack.

HTH.

Re: Boring bit

Last i was looking for long bits, I saw...

drexel (taiwan?) - auger L200 19 (3/4") 22 (7/8") 25 (1") mm --hans

irwin/record/marples - R235 universal series 8"
11/16" 7/8" 1" 1-1/8" 1.25" --panda

R295 extra long series 16-18"
9/16" 1" 1.25" --hans

stanley bit brace 02-110 10" sweep (also kyk branded)
02-112 12" sweep

dormer A110 hss long series drill bits 1/8 to 1", lengths 106-290 mm --panda
as above but somta (south africa?) --panda

In general or if more time for online, search also for 'beam bits', like colt/horst miebach.

If can't find large+long bit, how about pilot hole with small+long bit followed by large+shorter bit from both sides half depth.

Re: Boring bit

Tried a spade bit set with extender when I was boring my workbench's tail vise hole.. Can't recall if it's KCT; probably. It did the job for me but really scary using it. The darned extender just doesn't spin true. Suggest, if you ever try it, use low RPMs to minimize risk. Also use thick protective clothes, goggles, gloves...

Re: Boring bit

spade bits without extenders are scary enough to use.

i believe they were invented long before the forstners...

only i dont find any forstners longer than any spade bits of the same diameter.

my spade bits are rusting somewhere else.... and i dont care.

He-he. I found a good use for one of them. As driver for threaded inserts.

This is similar to the threaded inserts I use. You can see that it requires a rather large flat screwdriver to fit the notch. The spade bit fits just right.

Re: Boring bit

Yup. This is really boring

How about a hole saw:

With a removable center bit:

Replace the bit with a suitable shank extender:

Use the normal setup to start the hole. Then remove the waste material inside using chisels. When you're already using the extended shank the wobble will hopefully be kept in check by the initial hole.

BTW, pictured above is a Morse hole saw. 1" diameter, US made. Got it from Hans Tools. They have many diameters available.
