Hi Team,

It's almost Father's Day. Wife told me she will get me one power tool as gift. I tried to push my luck and ask for 2 but she is firm I can only get 1. Which brings me to this question: If you only have money to get either one which would you get, a circular saw or a jig saw?

I seldom use hard wood for cutting and I usually use 3/4" plywood. The thickest wood I ever cut is 2".

I know it is unfair to be asking this because the purposes of these 2 saws are different. But I know, we can make compromises. With enough patience and adjustments, one tool can do the work of the other.

Thanks in advance for any insights.

Re: Circular saw or Jig saw?

IMHO get a 7-1/4 circular saw.

Re: Circular saw or Jig saw?

my first saw tool was a jigsaw.

after awhile i had to buy the circular saw. I wouldve left the jigsaw till much later. Circular saw would be the first buy

you will almost never get a straight cut with a jigsaw. And for the first batch of projects, all that matters is cutting straight.

Ive only started to use the jigsaw now that ive gained a bit more experience and got into cutting curves. it was gathering dust for more than half a year 🙂

Re: Circular saw or Jig saw?

well it really depends on your needs. straight cuts would point to a cs. but for versatility, a jigsaw is my first choice. cutting shapes or curves is almost impossible and unsafe with a cs and cutting long straight cuts with a jigsaw, a practice in patience... BUT with practice can be done, hence my recommendation.
but if you are getting a jigsaw, get one with pendulum action, it makes cutting easier and blade last longer.
the best one available locally is the Bosch 80PBE closely followed by the 80PB and would recommend either of them. now, if you decide to get another brand, I would tell you to get Bosch jigsaw blades. I wouldn't use anything else (they cut well and clean) but make sure the jigsaw accepts t-shanked jigsaw blades...
