Re: Clamps and vises thread

@ owyn
Yup! Thats a big catch all right.

I covet that.

Are there anymore from where you got it?

Hi Ben,

I was with the thought that you also chanced upon a Wilton Bullet vise when you bought the rim. I wonder if you rebuilt it already.

What I like best about Owyn's catch is that it has the swivel base included.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Hi sir Ben, it's the only one in there, would have posted if there were extra. I bought it for 11K, recto alley between masangkay and benvanidez, beside the motor rewinding shop that ironically has 4 or 5 bullets in service. Almost opposite of YALE.

But I don't think that's a good lead. In that same alley but different store, i got a Rohm keyless chuck labeled "w. germany." I followed up for 1.5 years for more but it was really the last one. (I even told the guy that i'd pay him extra for him to rummage through their bodega. No dice.) For the past 3 years, I've browsed that store monthly , and it's only now that a bullet showed up.

OK i admit it, I PMed JayL something like "Sir JayL, please help me. A lonely Wilton is threatening to follow me home, my disposable income for feb's finished and i don't want to touch my savings." But i knew i'd kick myself if i let it go, then can't find another one. I rationalized that i don't have a single vise in the workshop while JayL has a harem ^_^.

While i'm proud to be a bonafide, card-carrying member of the wilton bullet owner's club, I'd say owners of english record mechanic's vise should be content with theirs. It's a good cast iron vise =).

Or to compare apples to apples, record has a ductile iron machinist vise too.

The Record "75" touted as "unbreakable." That, or a wilton bullet is the one to hunt down.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Sad b*stard wilton. Another 4 incher but Schiller park era (keyway is stamped 173.) Amusingly, it turns smooooth owing to the sealed design. Not sure but I believe a new record has more play than this oldie. The Jaws aren't original. It's a bit wider, thinner and hence the jaws doesn't meet and leaves a gap of about 3/16." It'll be a bit of a surgery to remove the welded jaws.

How was the found wilton that came with the rim btw? Looks like it needs to be remachined and new jaws made for, like the beater vise at work.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

I reckon that Wilton can still be refurbished. Will take some effort but can be pretty again.

Someday given a chance I would also want a Wilton but only after I upgrade my welders. Can hunt at craigs and ebay for one.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Don't you think it's better to have a machine shop mill Ben's vise jaws back to specs?

Re: Clamps and vises thread

^ Oh yeah. Hopefully, he knows a machineshop that does topnotch work (I don't =/.) At philconstruct, there are a couple of booths by machine shops that cater to the auto and semicon industry. Should be a piece of cake for them.

I am hoping that in a year or two, someone who has a bridgeport mill and a mid-size lathe would join in on the forum...

Hi Ben,

I was with the thought that you also chanced upon a Wilton Bullet vise when you bought the rim. I wonder if you rebuilt it already.

Unfortunately, i havent given much time on it yet. The guy who said he can fix my Wilton is asking me to buy a "Cast Iron Electrodes" with this specs "NC-116, AWS ENi-Cl". I simply couldnt find it on most industrial hardware ive been through. I even ask the guy to write it for me cus im sure those hardware stores will think im just mumbling. He actually told me that i can buy it on some electrodes manufacturer but it must be by boxes, they dont sell retail.

When he said that even i can weld it myself. I kinda started doubting him. Heck i could not even manage to sustain a decent weld on 6013.

Could you take a pic of the jaws?

No matter how the jaws are welded, the inside ledge, the "L" that butts against the bottom and back of the jaw should be pristine methinks. Or at least most of it.

Isn't it just a matter of removing the shallow weld on top and sides? Since the jaw is sacrificial, it's better to grind more to that side instead of the casting.

Sir JayL, where did you buy your torch you use for heating/ removing rusted bolts? A bernzomatic is 2K and a bottle of mapp is .5K at alonzo. And the connection is not compatible with butane iwatani cooking burners it turns out.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

@Owyn

Mine is a Victor Dual Fuel Turbo Torch Model STK-9. I opted for this one without an igniter in favor of a slimmer torch tip body.

IIRC I paid 2.5K at a refrigeration shop here near me somewhere in Evangelista St. I can't recall if the Mapp gas fuel was already included. I'm happy with it.

Currently I'm helping a friend setup a new machine shop with corresponding tooling. It will be equipped with a 12 or 16 foot bed lathe machine and a universal milling machine. The shop is in Paranaque. He'll be fabricating auto turbo exhaust systems ( my interest in the project ) and cater to marine services to name a few. Ossie met the guy also. Hopefully we can get better access there for future needs.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

^ What's a turntable sir?

A welding turntable is a jig, mostly made of clamps and vises. Where you put projects to be welded. You can turn/spin it around, even upside down as you weld it. anyway, I'll create a thread as soon as I start building one.

Might as well get one or two i there's an immediate need. At that price, you won't lose much.

FWIW, got a truper C clamp and i won't buy another again. They didn't skimp on the materials - the body is good nodular iron, but the lack of craftsmanship sure shows. The screw is out of alignment. Maybe if I looked at it thoroughly so i wouldn't have ended up with a subpar specimen.

Btw, i went to the store where i bought the wilton vise, wala na talaga.
