Re: Clamps and vises thread

Naku Ninong Jay! The Irwin engineers might see those setups and scratch their heads thinkin what we're doing with their designs 😀

LOL hahahhahaha 😮 But in fairness these Irwins are more durable and better quality than those found in he hardware malls here.

@V your'e an Irwin Quick Grip user too. Can you kindly chime in and please give your real world feedback on this product line. tks

i will always be a fan of irwin quick grips..they are easy to use and of course they are the original makers of these fast acting clamps...

pros than competitor fast acting clamps
1. quick and fast
2. non marring pads
3. stable
4. nice built and should last very long
5. nice bright blue and yellow color
6. newer ones have spreader mechanism
7. light

cons
1. smaller ones not locally available but previously available
2. lesser psi grip versus F clamps or other screw mechanism clamps
3. relatively expensive

for fast acting clamps, id never buy any other brand.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Anyone have both the Irwin Quick-Grip Mini (546*) and the Gator Clamps Midi Bar-Man (406-6 or 406-12)? How do they compare? I only have the Irwin so far but the Gator Clamps local prices are compelling.

The Irwin engineers might see those setups and scratch their heads thinkin what we're doing with their designs

There are 8 possible configurations. My guess is that the engineers were or are trying to figure out what extra degree(s) of freedom could be feasibly added to push that number beyond 8. I think most useful candidate would be depth of jaws.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

i actually tried the bar man brand at panda but it was pale by comparison to the irwin. at least to me.

yes the trigger is bigger and plastic but the handle of Irwin is way too much bigger. best for my big hands.

at least we have options..i think the bar man maybe good for light clamping works.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Just flew back from a trip from Singapore (work). Must be the only guy crazy enough to go to the (probably) only DIY shop in the island to buy some clamps. Got these:

Sorry about the blurred photo.

Clamps're Wolfcraft. Seem to be well-made. The whole lot cost me S$100 (exacto!). Bar clamps were S$28 apiece while the ratchet clamps are S$22 ea. Not sure if those prices are a ripoff. Appreciate any comments or scathing criticism. Will try them out this weekend.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

^Great, hope they serve you well in your application =).

Kelantan lane in SG. Found a couple of hardware stores in there. (FWIW, the hilti store is also in there.) Got some shinwa rules (guy gave me the catalog and told me to order what i needed, delivery van from supplier wingpoh (wingpoh.com.sg) came later in the day.) Wish i could go back and get some more.

From my limited experience, in terms of bargain deals and NOS (new old stock) finds, there's not much. But quality is waaaayyy up. Waayy up as are the prices, heh =/. Pretty much all the known brands - and some obscure ones too- from japan and europe are present in the market.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

Do you think these toggle clamps were a good buy at $21.57 shipped stateside ( 970 pesos )?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&_trksid=p4340.l2557&rt=nc&nma=true&item=290540601369&si=yLlampK%252B5%252B%252F6CcYKyQTbXH7bFhE%253D&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT

I did not bid but almost did. Could have been useful for jigs making.

Re: Clamps and vises thread

I think the small ones are De Sta and the big ones are Good Hand. What turned me off was that it looked like the small ones are really very small.

Anyway will watch out gain if any deal pops out on these clamps.

Tried these clamps on my strip planks to make sure there are no gaps between strips. Works great. It is also light so I can manipulate it in one hand while holding planks with the other. The plastic pads are also just the right softness/hardness that it does not mar the wood but also really grabs.

I'd definitely recommend them. Just don't know if they're available locally. Also, haven't used Irwins so I can't compare.

make the trip to Panda (binondo or Araneta ave) you can save a bunch of money on the Ponies. Though the money you save you can spend on other stuff that you can buy there too :p
