just as excited as anyone else who brought home their own stash...here is my review of the router technologies "extreme extension"...i trust beebeenator also has one too but i dont think i saw his review elsewhere in this site...anyways

the main reason why i ordered this product is to get away with the cumbersome backwrenching chore of loosening the collet nut from below the table...as you well know, the makita 3612c has a spindle lock and you make use of just one wrench (with your right hand) to do the job...but sometimes, i think i have had attacks of osteoarthritis (?) and had a hard time pressing the spindle lock making the job even more difficult.

i think i saw three reviews posted by proud owners in the amazon site and they are more than satisfied with the product.

as you can see below, the collet nut of the 3612c makita router can reach that far only.. and i never got to use some nice old tongue and groove makita bits with shorter shanks...without the collet extension, the carbides are just proud by 1/4" above the plate.

with an allen wrench (6mm), one can simply grip the shank with just a slight turn and off you go...the photo below shows that i have at least 5/8" extension from the plate..i would like to mention that the 'L" shape allen wrench provided by router technologies isnt the best for the job..better get yourself the longer one to loose/tighten the allen screw..much better control since the turning hand is a few inches from the edge of the router table.

i only wish they made a bigger size 8mm allen screw for comfort.

also, i already installed the clear acrylic dust collection port Timber reserved for me and it just fit perfectly..this dc port will shine when i make some rabbets on assembled frames..but the ultimate role of the dc port will be for handheld routing.

photo from below the table

and before i forget...the collet extension is a well machined accessory and a must if you still havent got the full featured Triton! hehehe

sorry over post nako ng photo but i hope those handymans who own a 3612c makita router (table mounted) will be delighted to know the beauty of this new acquisition.

cheers!

Re: extreme router collet extension

I also have router bit changing difficulties with my Bosch router and Bosch portable RT. I have to remove the router to change bits. Do you think this tool will also solve that problem?

If I get you right you need only the allen key to change bits.

How stable is the tool when the router turns at high speed or when loaded with larger bits?

The Makita 3612C is 3 1/4 HP. Will this extension put more motor strain on the lesser powered 2 1/4 hp routers?

Thanks for the nice review.

Re: extreme router collet extension

Jay, the Bosch router is designed differently than the 3612C and should replace the bits outside the table(just like the dewalt and the Hitachi) so in reality, this isn't needed sa router mo. but it would definitely increase the height of your router bits, but not by much, about 1/2" max...

Re: extreme router collet extension

Doc. V I did consider that extension way back before I brought my Triton, yes they are very functional and very helpful for old people 😀 hehehe...
I presume there is little to none vibration added to the router?

I just checked it out . This extension cost 30% of a Triton 2 1/4" router. 😮

Re: extreme router collet extension

@jay,
i only test driven the collet extension with that rabbeting bit (photo above) to see if there was play on both sides but eyeballing on 24.000 rpm did not show anything of concern..i test run a piece of 2x and likewise didnt feel anything unusual...

it is well balanced...if you run your fingertip on the edges of the tool, you will still feel the shallow machining grooves...proof that they made this dynamically balanced..i believe that if they had lengthened the collet extension, unwanted vibrations may already occur...honestly at this time, i am still afraid to test drive the 2" diameter bits for frame and panel...maybe later.

do i need a teclock (i forgot the spelling) here?

calling owyn!

hehe

PS

i believe you can also benefit ingetting yourself a collet extension..there are a few brands out there but i think this one got my 4.5 stars!

you mean to say, you need to remove the router from the housing to remove the bits?

the best na nga Triton...

I trust the lesser powered routers can still handle very well the collet extension as long as it can accept 1/2" shanked bits.

router technologies specifies that this must be used for plunge routers only...more detail on the package insert though.

Re: extreme router collet extension

Yes I drop the router and take it off the base, replace the bit then mount again. I have not checked if it can be done on the table while raising the router fully but will check it out next time. Most probably will need a bent wrench in case it is possible.

Re: extreme router collet extension

Just like Doc V said, mine also has practically no run out (eye balling) and definitely no added vibration.

now to make this thing WORTHWHILE (kasi may nag sabi na 30% ng triton router huhuhu) I will hopefully make a scissor jack riser thing for the 3612c RTable. was supposed to do it today but my table saw was yearning for a fine tune-up
