Re: forstner bit in handheld drill

I've done lesser tasks with a Fostner bit and a handheld drill. For straight holes it is ok if you can keep the bit precisely perpendicular to the surface of the workpiece. Doing so is rather difficult though even at a slow speed. I'd not consider this method for cutting out mortises. It might work if you space the holes so they don't eat into each other but it will still be difficult to get a precise mortise.

I use Fostner bits a lot for just plain drilling because of the cutting edge on the circumference which give cleaner cuts IMHO than regular bits.

I read a tip for how to do this. Search for "Rx for Wandering Forstners".

Nice tip there guad. For mortising one should still space the holes so they don't touch otherwise once the bit clears the guide block the bit will start to wander again.

Re: forstner bit in handheld drill

i have come across some accidents caused by the same set up. important to have the material clamped or secured and fingers away from or near the drilling area. drilling straight is vital during this cut since if one side touches the material ahead of another, it can cause the bit to drift which can damage the material and your hand if within the area. doable with handheld drill but best with a drill press...
