Re: Handplanes thread....... show what you have.

Hey it finally arrived! Does that mean the box is there? Or you had it shipped separately?

this was shipped separately together with this o.

Jay,
Shavings show a tunes up plane when you can cut full width(or full blade size) and full length indicating that the plane has leveled the material.

the thinner the shaving the better...

Re: Handplanes thread....... show what you have.

If you were to have a minimum set of planes, what should that be?

My take:
Block plane for shotgun planing
Long jointer for flattening
Smoothing (4 1/2?) for final planing
Spoke shave for curves

Would this set be good?

BTW, what do those numbers mean: 4 1/2, 6, etc? And why is 4 1/2 considered a good smoothing plane?

EDIT: just did some Wikipedia-ing. Here're some good explanations:

Re: Handplanes thread....... show what you have.

4 1/2 is wider than a regular 4. #6 is around 20" long, in between 5 and 7 (22")(yeah right). I would recommend a block, #5,#7 and #4. #5 is consider a jack plane(jack of all trades), for rough stock, small jointer and even as a smoother depending on how well tuned it is and how you sharpen the blade.

Dumb mistakes will always be dumb mistakes, unless . . . . you learn from it, and then it will be learning experience.
