IIRC, those numbers are adopted from the old Stanley numbering-system for handplanes.
1 for Low Angle Block, 2-4 for Smoothers, 5 for Jack (as in, all-around "jack of all trades")
and 6-upward for Jointers.
Minimum for me would be one Low Angle Block plane, one Jack plane, and a Jointer plane.
If you buy low-end units (Eagle, etc), make sure you dress the soles (the steel underside
or "face" of each plane, and by 'dressing', I mean get the sole flat and smooth), because
low-end units invariably have uneven soles.
You basically remove the blade, color the entire sole with a permanent marker, lay down a
sheet of fine sandpaper (face-up) on the flat piece of thick float glass or countertop marble
or granite, place the plane sole-down on the sandpaper, and move the plane back and forth
to sand the sole flat. Any dips in the sole will remain colored by the marker, and you want to
keep on going until no marker-color is left. The blade will obviously need some first-time TLC
as well.
I did this for an Eagle #3, and was satisfied with the resulting performance, considering how
cheap it was (the handles were varnished crap and the lever cap was poorly cast, however,
and needed separate corrective work)
Just my 2
