handtools are nice, just yesterday I got myself a Groz Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane.

it is what a router can do only slower and very much less noise and no electricity is needed.
cuts rabbets and fillisters which is basically the same. rabbets is a recess or groove cut into the edge of a piece of machineable material, usually wood to increase glue contact and thus improve strength.
gave it a whirl and it does good work and fast too...

so for those wanting the joint but doesn't want to blow the budget with a router, here is a good option.

cheers.

Fantastic Timber! I've always wanted one of those. Also most bought a Record model I came across at MC Home Depot. Did you get it in Binondo? How much did it cost?

it'd be great if some of those treasure shops arent in binondo 😛

after reading a few articles and seeing how Timber does his craft. I may scrap the "need" for a machine powered jointer.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

I've heard about this Panda so many times. Can you please mark it on this map:

I'll have to go to Binondo pretty soon to get some materials for the boat I'm building. This is normally a whole day affair so I try to do it only once a year.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

I was able to go to panda in Araneta avenue

i saw alot of nice quick clamps that are 1 meter or more long.... nice

their addresses are listed here

http://www.eyp.ph/search?q=panda+construction+supply&loc=&vstype=basic&fzq=&x=59&y=10

there is a view map option. Since you are in ortigas area maybe Araneta branch would be more forgiving. ( i fear of binondo roads kasi hahah)

their sign in Araneta ave is very inconspicuous. i had to uturn 3 times or so to find em..

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

There was a discussion of Panda Construction Supply, especially the G. Araneta Ave. location, in this thread on Dremel/rotary tools:
http://www.pinoyhandyman.com/showthread.php?t=402&page=2
There was also a map in one of the posts.

When asked whether their Binondo location was bigger or had more items, their reply was not in the positive.

I wish someone would suggest to them to put up a website. At least listing what things they sell.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

parang business to business lang kasi yung concentration ng Panda.

They looked at me with a weird look (anong ginagawa netong tao nato sa store kinda look) hahaha i guess they are not used to having non business customers come in and have a short window shop (and actually buy stuff)

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

Guad, let me answer your questions... the Binondo store is smaller than the Araneta branch. and that a lot of tools sold in T. Alonso are bought from them and the stores earn from it, thus they cannot be visible to everyone (it kills business relations).

Bee,
I really don't go to Araneta branch, but whenever I am in the Binondo branch, they make me feel welcome, in fact I feel at home. 🙂
the last time I went in, the owner saw me and pulled me to show their new offering, which I got (Groz)... they do know I am a hobbyist and don't belong to a business or store... I believe Jay can attest to that. they actually have a cheerful crowd there.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

I get the same treatment from the owners of my favorite industrial store here in Cainta. During the first few years, they did not pay much attention to me especially when they'd remember I'd said I was buying for my personal use. Nowadays though they go out of their way to help. The owner even asks "so what is your project this time?" whenever he sees me then goes way way out of his way to help. His family does the same too.

The point is DIY guys should not let themselves be put off by stores that seem to cater only to the commercial buyer. In many cases, I think we DIYer provide a "breath of fresh air" for them. Here's a tip, don't go in not having done your homework. More often than not, especially the hired staff, store staff do not know their products in-depth. They'll know what they have but they seldom know their wares in-depth. You will only piss them off pointing out they don't know their products that well. So you be the expert. One last tip: know and speak the local vernacular.

Things are changing for the DIYer. The mall hardware stores are proof and the traditional B2B stores I believe are taking notice.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

I agree Incc, nowadays if a store cannot or will not cater to DIYers it will be at a huge loss for them. now is actually a good time for DIY people...
