Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

Incc63 pointed me once to his favorite industrial supplier in Cainta where I bought a drill bit sharpening jig.

Yes the owner is a nice guy whom I've met too. Very accommodating.

Might go visit again some time to see what's new. I remember he had a lot of automotive stuff as well.

@Timber

Bro have you any opinions on the other Groz hand planes particularly the small block plane. I was thinking that the Stanley might be better though I had no chance to see it in person. You own one of the low angle Stanley block planes and you seem to be happy with it.

On initial impression the Groz blade seems to be heftier than the Stanleys but I could be wrong.

I really can't say yet Jay, I saw their block plane, they're well built and heavy as well. two things I find different from the Groz vs the Stanley. that the Groz is slightly thinner body and the blade. haven't sharpend my Groz blade yet. don't know how it would hold a sharpness.

Kindly don't forget to update us. I'm sure a lot of people would want the feedback. These Groz planes are one of the few products I've seen that are priced less locally compared to the US. I saw at Woodcraft how much your rabbeting plane cost and with shipping added I believe you got a really very good deal.

The low angle block plane is priced $10 less here. I just hope we are getting the same quality as those planes destined for the US market.

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

hey you go Jay, since I had the extra time and energy, I sharpened the blade with a 25 degree angle and about 2 or 3 degrees for the second bevel. the blade sharpens a little difficult and sharpens very well. must be a good metal made for the blade...
after I tuned up the plane itself, minor tweaks only and started to make rabbets.
lets start with plywood...
cutting along the grain poses little trouble getting through the substrate. and after developing the initial rabbet, the cross grain in plywood was easy to cut.

as you can see in that picture, cutting across the grain can be a little tricky. started cutting a little deep in the initial pass did this...

so I tried again, this time making a shallow pass...

still not happy with the results, there is a work around it though, using a cutter to cut the top layer should fix the problem. though I will not try that anymore, just believe me on this.
cutting on solid wood is a different story. across and along the grain cuts give a good result...

Re: Handtools: Duplex Rabbeting and Fillister Plane

as it turns out, the blade sharpens well and stays sharp, I reckon it hold blade sharpness better than the Stanley's.
but I do see some flaws in the tool itself.
1. the guides are not aligned well and that bending the guide bar seems like the only solution. not a difficult fix, just that I don't like it that way.
2. the opening clogs a lot, on shallow cuts and on deep cuts. I use an awl to clean it after several passes. a fix can be done, simply by enlarging the opening some more. again, it is a fix I do not like.

But, weighing the value and usefulness of the tool, I would still recommend it. the workarounds are not difficult and the price of a similar Stanley would cost double if not more.
trying on solid wood seems the way to use it, seems you can even make tenons with it...
cheers.

I've heard about this Panda so many times. Can you please mark it on this map:

It is on Yuchengco (Nueva) St. corner Dasmarinas St., with the entrance on Yuchengco opposite the blue box labelled 'Brass eyelets, cringles, nylon thread, leather'.

BTW, I did not see anything resembling the description of the blue box at the supposed location of the blue box.

Thanks bro. I think I know the shop now. There are quite a few tool shops along Dasmarinas. Actually the shoe and bag materials shop is nearer to Gandara. It is only about 20m from Dasamarinas but the density of shops being what it is in Binondo it is easy to miss it.
