Hi Team,
Any help is appreciated. A lot of times, I need to drill straight holes. I only have an ordinary drill and I do not have a drill press. Two (2) questions:
1. I came across a drill attachment which will enable you to convert an ordinary drill to bore "straight as an arrow" holes. I saw the link below:
http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_00967173000P?mv=rr
Can anybody please tell me where I can get this locally? OK lang sa akin if I have to go to Binondo.
2. In the absence of this attachment, can I use my router and fasten my drill bit?
Thanks a lot. Cheers!
Re: Help! How do I drill straight holes using my ordinary power drill?
i honestly dont know if you can chuck your 1/4" HSS drill bit to a plunge router and take a spin to drill stright holes...
havent thought about that..other thanwith the drill press.

Re: Help! How do I drill straight holes using my ordinary power drill?
In the absence of a jig .......
When using a hand drill try not to hold it like a gun w/ the index finger on the trigger.
Instead use your middle finger for the trigger and your index finger to get your alignment bearing. Sheet metal guy gave me this tip and since then I've been drilling straight holes than my previous gun style.

Re: Help! How do I drill straight holes using my ordinary power drill?
And if aligning by eye is not enough, but not so critical that a drill press is required, then you can improvise a gunsight (if the drill doesn't already come with something like a depth rod that can be used as a gunsight). I have used extended, custom-fitted chopstick attached with rubber bands for gunsight and boresighted the thing using a straightedge, then when drilling, aligned the gunsight with suitable guide at the desired drilling angle.
When boresighting the gunsight, what may need some estimation is where the axis of the drill is.
Sound like a lot of trouble, so I have bothered to do this only for non-90 degree angles.

Assuming the drill bit will fit the router collet or collet adapter (and an exact fit is required), the speed rating of the drill bit has to be considered. The ratings on drill bits that I have seen appear to be in the range of a few thousand rpm, e.g., 1500-4500 rpm, depending on bit size.
Router speeds are in excess of 20,000 rpm, no load. If variable speed, the lowest speed is around 9,000 rpm.
Always good idea to wear eye protection, especially if performing this experiment.
Re: Help! How do I drill straight holes using my ordinary power drill?
Thank you to all those who replied. The router option may not be such a good idea after all. Middle finger on the trigger . . . Hmmm - - - That, I will try.
But I still hope somebody can lead me to that drill attachment.

That was quick. Thank you timber.

Nice tip. I'll try that one during drilling since i dont a have a drill press.
@Timber
Thanks.
I will visit LYS sometime this week since i will be needed similar tool to drill a hole perpendicular.

The attachment i saw is not the same as the pic that was posted. Its more like a benchtop jig plus its got a lever on it.
