I am not really into woodworking but I think it is inevitable not to combine metal works with some wood in my home projects.
So I plan on buying woodworking tools one bit a a time.

If you are in my shoes, what would you buy first, second etc????

Biggest material I probably would work on is a 1 inch plywood.

Basics I guess would be the cutting saws like for simple wood working projects,a hand saw and circular saw, then hammer and chisels and of course your measuring tapes and square angles. Don't forget 1 or 2 hand planers of different sizes, nails and carpenter's glue then orbital wood sanders plus probably a few wood clamps. Other things or accessories will follow I suppose and as needed.

I consider myself not a wood worker too but I have these basic tools to use at my disposal when there are some repairs to be done at home or simple wood projects needed by wifey. Perhaps in the long ran I will just be adding some more power tools for wood working just to make thing easier and faster.

Hope other members can chime in specially the woodworkers here.

Hope this helps. 😉

For me I'll buy the below in order.. I'll mention only the power tools as this is where money goes.
1. Circular saw (jig saw is optional). For me the circular saw is the King of the wood section of my workshop.
I have a table saw but CS is still the king.
2. Drill/ cordless screw drivel drill(my most favorite tool). Save you a lot of time during assembly time
3. Sander
4. F clamp and or pipe clamp
5. For a more advance stage... A router

To speed up your work even more and if the budget will allow:
6. Table saw
7. Miter saw

Thanks for the inputs. I forgot to tell I am asking for power tools. I already have a couple of hand saws, some chisels, hammer, generic jigsaw, and a drill.

So I will probably save up for a circular saw. Then maybe a router next hehehe.

IMHO, it depends on what project you're building, better buy them as you go! 1" plywood would probably be difficult to cut by handsaw (but still doable if you want to go traditional tools like me) a jigsaw or circular saw is ideal for cutting straight (needs a guide) a small plane (block plane) for the edge but you can get away by using sand paper ( handplane is cool though) but really depends on what project you have in mind.

In whatever order my wife will allow.
😀

Seriously, though: "woodworking" rather than "carpentry?"
1. tape measure
2. straightedge
3. combination square
4. handsaws (G.P. and drawcut-japanese)
5. all-steel claw hammer
6. clamps (C, F, angle, spring, bar, etc)
7. chisels

...then some power
8. drill and bitset
9. plunge router and bitset
10. table saw

JM2, FWIW, YMMV...

hahahaha!

After I bought the basic measuring tools, my first power tool is a cordless impact drill/driver. I thought of using screws instead of nails and a hammer.. 'coz I'm still not comfortable with my hammering skills. :p

Measure twice, cut once, then force it to fit. 😀

Hi, I've recently fallen down the woodworking rabbit hole and would like to start with a simple project - maybe a pallete shelf or wooden toolbox?

I'd like to ask for help on basic hand tools I'll be needing to get started. And maybe suggestions as well for my very first project. 🙂

So far, I've narrowed it down to:

1. hand saw (small, Japanese)
2. combination square
3. tape measure
4. chisels
5. block plane (Stanley)
6. hammer

Thanks!

Ps. Is it advisable to get a drill from the get-go?
