Re: jet jts10 first impressions

Bee is that the Jet contractor saw? Probably the same one I saw at Panda Binondo a few days ago.

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

that saw has alot of good reviews. Dust collection is a pain though which isnt a too much of a prob for me since my basement is open air on one entire side. the only downside is the lack of miter slots. I need miter slots for 3 jigs i will be using all the time. Cross cut sled, thin strip jig (although there is a work around) and the circle cutting jig

I have bumped into the ORIGINAL JIMMY JIG... i have been eyeing on the plan for sale for over 2 months now. Last night i bought it. 10 bucks. US$

Its a simple concept. Ive known it was simple all along but i needed to figure out how he mounted the sliding rip table (you have to see the jig for this statement to make sense) then i saw the plan. and indeed it was simple.

for ten bucks he put in several dozen of photos of other jigs and what not which i believe is worth it. I will be making it tonight and hopefully i will finish tonight too.

i will post some progress pics but for the benefit of Macduff (the dude who made the jig) i will only post some. so not to infirnge on his copyright. The thing is patented according to him. And accordingto him the rack and pinion fence of the dewalt tablesaws were borrowed from him AFTER he proposed the idea to the manufacturer he of course got no royalties... i dont know how true that is.

come to think of it... i may setup my own rack and pinion with wooden gears hmmm

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

sliced the head of the splitter. Where the blade guard attaches to. The splitter height is now parallel to the blade height.

Why? coz i use the cross cut sled the most over anything else on this TS. so the oversized splitter is annoying. Plus the guard makes more danger than it solves. The splitter knife isnt bolted onto a rigid platform. Its bolted onto te dust collecting chute that is stable but wobble with some force.

Hence when i pass through a stocl with the blade guard attached the guard inadvertently bends the splitter and hence,.,, the splitter dont work so well...

I will attach a blade guard (simple one) using acrylic that will slop in to the splitter knife (that i hacked using my rotary tool and a diamond disc... this thing is a must have for any workshop :)) and can be easily detached when cutting thick stocks in half.

Will post picture tonight

i suspect by the time the bosch is available i will have a satifactory working TS 🙂

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

here is the splitter i was talking about

and here is a person trying to make an owner type run like a Ferrari.....

these are aluminum rails..... for.... i havent figured out what to really do next.

I can either do the jimmy jig now... or attach a shop made fence (which by the way will definitely be square on and wont wiggle... then cut opening on the aluminum bracket where the miter slots enter and exit. However this still does not solve the problem of the surface not being flat.......

So maybe i will jimmy jig rig this tomorrow... dang mdfs are too heavy for me to unload from the pickup....

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

Ferrari or not, it would still be a souped-up owner-jeep 😉

Keep it up but always do it with safety.

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

almost there

my runners are marine ply, sliding on aluminum. Well i do intend to change the materials in 3 months. Just wanted to see if i can hack it before i buy angle bars, ball bearing and what not 🙂

there seems to be no play. i am surprised. There was a fair bit of shimming done to make sure both are parallel, otherwise snug runners on both side are of no use

the sliding top loses snuggness at the ends. I just need to put a cross member (not sure if thats what it is called) on both end of the bars that has a foot for extra support. So the alum bars remain parallel at the end and should be able to bear load.

the ply runners are coated with linseed oil and later with wipe on poly

the top will get a wipe on poly treatment too. Been contemplating on giving it a spray paint job....

i also havent figured out the clamping mechanism. this is because of the protruding bolts, my runners arent the way it was meant on Macduff's plan. I could probablt improvise something that uses toggle clamps.

all parts i used here were stuff lying around in the shop... its good to be a hoarder 🙂 toggle clamps included hehe

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

hi JayL

i am reluctant to show the other stuff out of respect for the guy i bought the plans from.

i'll drop the guy an email and request permission.

its still missing an insert plate where the blade is at. My problem is clamping since i short cutted the build 🙂 i had to use what i had on hand.

i ripped ply wood. result was good.

He included plans for a cross cut sled too.

but if you ask me... if you have a good TS it really isnt necessary. The main point of his jig was to be able to cut whole size plywood. So original design commands a LONGER sliding table and for the TS to be sitting on the ground.

will post pics tonight if Globe broadband doesnt screw up again 🙂

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

due to my bolts i had to rabbet the runners.. plywood runners.

These are generously slapped witth linseed oil

Re: jet jts10 first impressions

sorry for the phone cam. The good cam is dedicated for baby moments 🙂

Macduff's plan calls for a screw clamp affixed somewhere. However as you can see from the plywood runners. There aint much area for clamping.

Hence i used toggle clamps... these were clamps for my rip jig which i never used hehehe. toggle Clamp idea came after i edge banded the infeed side, before then i didnt really know how to rig the toggle clamp

its attached to a 2x4 pine. I was glad i chose this pine out of mere convenience of length. The pine bends as the toggle clamp.. well clamps. This keeps me from over clamping and deforming the plywood runners
