Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

irrc, i had thought of "snipe" to be used as my username before...hehe

snipe is a common problem with handheld electric planers and is due to the operator (100%) and not with the tool (imho).

this problem i thought will be more often seen with short stocks fed to a thicknesser say 1 foot versus 5 feet coz the weight of the wood itself can overcome the force of the blade (ejecting the stock)...so..i think shorter stocks can have more snipe than longer ones, generally.

but as the makita claims (and a lot of reviews by third parties elsewhere including that of timber) that their baby (2012NB) to almost prevent the snipe from happening (no comparative tests done though between short and longer stock) is a real engineering feat.

maybe because, the 2012NB's motor is supported from moving unexpectedly (in any direction) by four strong 12mm steel bars.

Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

Are there any alternatives to Makita among the locally available top name brand bench planers? How about DeWalt DW734. Anyone looked into this model and whether the DeWalt distributor (Co Ban Kiat?) imports or could import it?

It is about $80 less than Makita 2012NB, which I am guessing could put it at around P25K if available locally.

Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

Co Ban Kiat (CBK) may not carry the full line of dewalt stuff.

I had a dewalt catalog for the philippines and sad to say not all items listed there are actually available (which is kinda frustrating because it was dewalt themselves who gave us the catalog....... ). I will give a call tom to black and decker/dewalt phils. and see if they have anything like that, hopefully i dont forget to do so 🙂

Although right now i doubt they do

if you intend to go yellow (:)) go for the DW735 and get the helical head option, that is the best option if you like yellow tools. yes they are priced higher and still 110V, but if it will cost you 25k to get a DW734, go get the 2012nb, not only is it 220V, it has support available. plus believe it or not is top of the heap when it comes to lunchbox planers and that is why it was an easy choice for me to make even without trying it...

Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

IMO 3k is not good enough to go yellow for this tool. Maybe if it's 8-10K even if it's 110V then yes for me ( since I already have a step down transformer) .

I was told by local distributor (Black & Decker, not Co Ban Kiat; DeWalt being a brand of Black & Decker) that they do not import DeWalt DW734, DW735 planers, or DW745 table saw, though they could probably special order at landed cost plus margin, probably from US, 220 V. They did not sound too enthusiastic and for some reason neither did I, in pursuing the idea.

Very difficult to find 220V tools from the US market.

Did they say if they could give a FINAL costing for us if we do place the order hence before it even gets shipped? I also suspect 60-90 days waiting time.

I also happend upon MY Tools hardware store along ortigas extension going to antipolo (i think , i am dyslexic in directions) the guy had a 2012nb thicknesser on display and said it it been there for 5 YEARS!!!! ... Parang gusto kong sabihin na... sayang naman yan naka display lang . I was tempted to offer a low price to buy it but i just felt so bad coz it would be taking advantage of em. His offer was 28.5K 500 pesos more from what Timber got his.

The store owner ended up with that unit because somebody ordered 5 units from him before and only paid for 3.

Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

From the looks of it he might give a good price. Cost of money. If it's just sitting there he might make more from selling it and getting salable items.

How about 25K offer? 🙂

Re: Makita 2012NB thicknesser

Hey that's the store that I've been referring to as "my favorite industrial supply store", and that might be the unit I was lusting for so many years ago ... well maybe not since I've been wanted one as early as 2000. Actually, this is their new store. The family that owns it has their original store along Felix Ave only 5 minutes away and is locally referred to as "Makita".
