Re: Need a new TS blade

Timb how about if the blade has a 0.098 kerf. Do you think the riving knife has to still be adjusted?

All the while I thought the riving knife has to be aligned to the middle of the blade. It's good you pointed it out.

you know me Jay, everytime I change the blade or anything that involves accuracy I check the settings. so yes, a new blade would require checking and adjustment if nec. it isn't difficult really. just take your time.

Yes. I just checked and looks like the RK is easy to adjust. Probably can use the dial indicator to help do this setup when I get the new blade.

a steel rule is the easiest way to align them, of course that is if your blade is aligned to the miter slots to begin with....

Re: Need a new TS blade

precisely the opposite Jarod, you align the knife to the blade on that side, leaving the other side (farther from the fence) the one that isn't aligned...

Tama gets ko na. The snag (with the blade) would be less because the knife and fence supports the wood. On the other side, the waste wood wood be loose and and less chance to get snagged.

Re: Need a new TS blade

@jay,

why worry too much of kickback using thin kerf blades when our 4100 is equipped not only with a riving knife but also pawls to keep the material flat to the table?unless you remove them and that makes some concern.

what i would not brave to do ever is to flip a CS and make it the TS.

Re: Need a new TS blade

Timb the 1040x has 0.098 kerf. Looks like there will be no snag. The same with the Diablo 1050X @ 0.098.

Are those the official specs? Whereever do they get those numbers. And how to take them -- minimum? maximum? average with unstated error spread?

I measured 102 mil kerf and 75 mil body on the D1050X.

I remember the constraint as --
kerf no less than a hair more than the safety device
body no more than a hair less than the safety device
(A hair being somewhere between 0.7 and 7 mil. Err on the side of big hairs.)

Spec is good to know but what is actual on your safety device.

Re: Need a new TS blade

This is what I measured on my 4100 Riving Knife.

.094" or converted to mm by Google 2.38 mm

Kerf - The width of the slot made by a blade saw as it cuts. Will the slot on the wood cut by the Diablo D1050X pass the riving knife thickness without clearance issues?

Re: Need a new TS blade

102 vs. 94 mil. Assuming that the cheap digital caliper that I used, which is made in an undisclosed location and based on display claims to resolve down to 0.01 mm or is that really 0.001" who knows, is accurate to at least +/- 0.1 mm, then the measured unit could be as low as 98 mil...
Assuming that your caliper may have similar worst-case error in either best- or worst-case direction...
Assuming alignment as mentioned...
Your conclusion is as good as mine.

(Is there only one unnamed factory that makes those caliper electronics and different brands just slap different labels on it?)

BTW, did you compare your actual of 94 mil with manufacturer spec?

Re: Need a new TS blade

@Guad

Is your Diablo 1050X installed already? If yes can you please measure the slot of the cut it makes on wood. Specs says it should be 0.098" or 2.48mm.

Thanks,

Jay

Re: Need a new TS blade

OK, am away from the blade now (200+ km away). Maybe next week at the earliest.

Don't see it why wouldn't clear your splitter/knife though, given the actual measurements and assuming our calipers are accurate and assuming alignment.

Yes, and finally got to take measurements.

Freud spec -- 98 mil (taking your word, as I have not read the spec)
Measured on blade -- 101 to 102 mil, with body of 73 to 75 mil (as I posted previously)
Measured width of cut on wood -- 105 to 107 mil

Re: Need a new TS blade

If its .105 inches ( 2.66 mm ) then it should clear the riving knife without any problems whatsoever.

I measured the thickness of the riving knife again and it's 2.38mm.

Thanks Guad.

Re: Need a new TS blade

Spec is 90 mil. I measure 91-92 mil (according to both caliper and micrometer). 92 mil happens to be the lower bound of the recommended kerf range. Your 93-94 mil sounds like it is slightly into the recommended kerf range. But since the actual blade seems quite fat at 102 mil, I don't think there should be a problem. I am guessing that the reported problems are cases of misalignment and/or manufacturing defects (out of tolerance on blade and/or knife).

Loosely related topic: Tolerance of joints, e.g., mortise and tenon. According to woodgears, it is about +/- 5 mil from best fit. In metric, this is about +/- 0.1 mm.

Interesting to note that the width of the cut exceeds the blade kerf by about this much (0.1 mm).
