I ordered phenolic plywood for my jig making. one 3/4 and another 1/2

costs a bomb

Has anyone used these for tool making?

I am making a LONG outfeed table for my table saw which will double as a router planing table (needed it to be perfectly flat.

And i intend to use the 1/2" phenol ply as a diy insert for my router table. and insert for my table saw.

costs me about 3K for those two sheets.... sheeeeesh. but it should last me a long time

Ordered from where?

Is there any place that sells that or MDF in less than full sheets?

Re: Phenolic plywood for jigs and shopmade tools

i got it... its not what i expected... its really crappy. the phenolic top layer is really thin and some parts are cracked. not to mention that the ply is no longer straight

i am probably better off with mdf...

Condolences on the crappy material Bee. Can't you return it?

Us boatbuilders are very particular about what plywood we use. Last year, a new brand came on the market that is absolutely the best plywood on the Philippine market. This is the Tuff brand. Here is a link to a discussion of it including where you can get it: http://www.pinoyboats.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=888 . It does cost about 25% more and may be difficult to get but IMHO it is absolutely worth it.

Timber, I really hate the traffic in Binondo although i speak the language 🙂 hmmmm lets sched it one of these days

Incc, (naki angkas kasi ako sa office) so medyo nakakahiya kung sila papa sauli ko.

My plan is either the shop comes and picks up the plywood and replaces them or i pay 1/2 of what they were asking. coz its worse than formworks plywood

Re: Phenolic plywood for jigs and shopmade tools

good thing i have a pick up

i am bringing back the ply to the office and having the supplier pick it up for a full refund. They said their phenolic are really like that........ it looked bloody awful. i should charge them for double handling..... oh well

i will look up the lead that Incc suggested. there is also another company Pan Ply. they have a website. And when i free some time i can take Timber up on his offer 🙂

Nalco Sales and World Home Depot, the supplier of 'Rhinoply' mentioned in another thread, also have websites.

Speaking of MDF, the MDF that is sold in the Home Depots and pictured on various websites are light brown/tan in color. But I got some MDF from Formaply that is dark brown in color, like lawanit. (BTW, is lawanit still in production?) Anyone know if the color of MDF is any indication of its quality?

Whatever that MDF outgasses (formaldehyde?) is quite strong. You can really smell it if the MDF is kept in an enclosed space.

Re: Phenolic plywood for jigs and shopmade tools

ahhhh now i know what it is.. i knew it smelled familiar. Our Narra plyboard smelled like that when we move in the new house

i wont comment on the brown shade of mdf but i will point out that there is an MDF with green speckles. Its the moisture resistant version.

Re: Phenolic plywood for jigs and shopmade tools

my phenolic plys were replaced a few days ago. they look alot better now. but i had still hoped a thicker phenolic layer. but this one is good and will use it for a cross cut sled for the table saw

Re: Phenolic plywood for jigs and shopmade tools

Has anyone used the Timplex brand of phenolic plywood?

The sample picture in this suit ad looks promising:
