Man, that's a question like "Do I need air?" If you have the cash, go for it!

Seriously, I work with rough mahogany mostly. And cupped and twisted boards are a perennial problem for me. Spend lots of time flattening. Managed to borrow a jointer once and it was a joy to use.

Almost bought one, in fact. Saved up enough moolah but ended up buying home theater speakers instead.

Now, saving up again.

Yes, Doc. A jointer is certainly a dire need! 🙂

Pangarap ko: at least 8-inch, parallelogram bed, helical (spiral) head.

Been looking at Grizzly.

Bee, magkano yung Powermatic?

The Grizzly G0490X is $1445. Add, maybe, $200 for shipping to Manila. That would end up cheaper than the Powermatic. And you get helical (spiral) cutterhead and a parallelogram bed.

Did you ask if they can they get other Powermatic models as well, especially the 6" ones, or limited to just that one 8" model? Model 60C for P78K? Sounds lower than US price?

As far as 'need' goes, there's always (and probably the only way to swing that debate the way you want it to go is) ... "I need what I want." 🙂

Swatted myself 'down' to a G0654. Going on one year now, works great so far, satisfied, no complaints or regrets. Needed two people to lift the bed onto the cabinet. Needed to figure out how to get the belt on, otherwise very difficult the obvious way. Needed to re-tap some of the small screw holes for the cover panels, so a small quality issue there. Looks like prices have increased since last year. Shipping was ~$100. IIRC, it is the only floor-standing model that ships in one box; the higher ones are in two boxes, so a step jump in shipping cost. One advantage in going to higher models is you can get 110/220 V. If you want parallelogram and spiral, I think you can get that at 6" with G0604ZX. 🙂

BTW, by coincidence, got to drop by Grizzly store last year:

Re: powermatic 8" jointee in panda

Asked Forex world for an estimate for shipping a Grizzly G0490X. Sent them the dimensions of the two boxes the jointer comes in. Response:

Box 1: 81" x 24" x 11": $145 shipping fee
Box 2: 39" x 20" x 29": $150 shipping fee

So, it would cost $1445 + $145 + $150 = $1740.

Still, comparable to the Powermatic.

Go, Bee!

Re: powermatic 8" jointee in panda

I have had an 8" jointer to use for more than a year which is very similar to the pm (now a loaner for another member till I get my shop back) and all I can say is " I want a 12" model":p
If I didn't have that jointer to use, I definitely would have that PM from Panda.

The speed and accuracy the jointer provided me would easily justify a purchase. Solid wood racks use to take me two full weeks to make without finishing. With the jointer, took me one week including finishing. Mas accurate pa!
So what are you waiting for? Kasya sa pick up mo yan Ben.... Hehehe

Btw, get extra blades so you have one to use while the other/s are being sharpened...

Regarding helical blades, I know merong kit for this model, but best double check.

Re: powermatic 8" jointee in panda

Somewhere I remember reading ... Powermatic and Grizzly are made in the same factory?

Dug up my pic of the G0490/G0490X on the showroom floor:

And the 6 inch counterpart, G0604ZX:
