Re: Requesting pics of tail screw vise and installation

I like this thread.

Last time I used a bench vise was when I was grade 5 and my favorite subject was Practical Arts. At Tonsuya Elementary School in Malabon, we had huge axe-scarred workbenches then with, probably, WWII survivor vises. I recall hours in heaven as I planed away woodstock on those vises.

Will build me a workbench one day...

@ jonathanscruz68

Could you give me a clue on how much a machine shop charges? I heard 250 an hour is a common baseline?

@balarila: same here, Practical Arts was my favorite subject in grade 5 & 6, I was even assigned as tool keeper for 2 consecutive years. I remember some of my projects were a folding stool, a turned wooden mallet, a driver's seat, a marking guage and an electric stove. The workbench vise that we used then has a quick release mechanism.

I am a little bit disappointed that the one i bought from Panda does not have that feature. I was able to browse their catalog and found out that it is a China made version of the Irwin Record. Well for the price of p3,780...you don't need to ask for more.

Re: Requesting pics of tail screw vise and installation

Hey, Timber. Been poring over my tail vise screw, same as yours, and trying to figure out how to install it. I plan to install as you did, with a sliding block with dog holes. What got me stumped is how to attach this sliding block onto the screw. I assume you screwed on that nut with flange onto the sliding block? How do you keep the screw-rod horizontal when there is nothing holding it up on the other end? Some advice, pls.

I believe Panda is now out of stock for good. They use to have the Record Tail Vise. Record company ownership had changed hand thus might be the reason why Panda won't have it anymore.

But best be sure. You can call them at 242-6154.

pa-OT po.

do you have a DIY Tail Vise plan that you can share? 😀
I've got two threaded rod (approx. 12") from HMR and planning to create for my workbench.

Measure twice, cut once, then force it to fit. 😀
