i need various opinions on this jig. some of you know of the lemon of a router i got. it is actually ok for rough jobs. So i was thinking of using it for this purpose.
I only need to joint wood upto 2 inches thick . At that point i will be very happy.
Any opinions on the jig itself?
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
a router table does the same thing, only the plan is made with the router sideways instead of upside down. all you need is an extra long straight bit and an offset on the router table outfeed fence side.
Makita sells those extra long straight bits... which I have and use for that purpose.

cool... ill try dropping by Mayon
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
I have those plans Bee. I even bought a 4" bit for it. The design is very similar to my Delta jointer. Timber is right that you can joint with a RT. You can also plane by the way . There is however problem however with using a RT to joint.
One common situation of using a jointer is to joint long planks. If the planks however are long enough, the typical RT's table width will not be wide enough and the plank will bend across the table when jointing the narrow edge. With a real jointer this situation is easier to deal with since you get to push down to press the workpiece to the supporting surface.
On the other hand, you will most of the time be jointing pieces short enough not to suffer this problem. Also, you could use table extensions or support stands.
Another difference is in how the depth of cut will be achieved. Using a conventional RT fence, the depth of cut is set by putting a shim on the outfeed half of the fence. A piece of Formica works nicely. The fine control of a jointer like in those plans is however missing. To get around this you could make a RT fence that allows the outfeed half to be adjusted. One of my GMC tables has this feature.
Jointing at angles is also a problem. I've used several methods over the years to do this with a RT. First used a slide piece fixed (nailed actually) to the RT tabletop spaced just far enough for the bit to get the right angle. The second was to build a fence/carrier to that could be angled in the vertical plane.
The tool plans at PlansNow are very well made. The jointer is only one of several I have bought. The costs are also very reasonable.

Among the Ezcut straight bits carried by Panda, there are two 'long' ones, #0191 (cutter diameter 1/2") and #0199 (cutter diameter 1-3/16"). Cutter length is 2" instead of the normal 1-3/16".
Are the Makita bits longer than 2"?
I was also looking for bottom cleaning bits but Panda doesn't seem to carry any of those.
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
I got Bosch bottom cleaning bits from Hanstools i think they are 3/4 diameter if iam not mistaken. Although as weird as it may sound, ezcut bits LOOKS like its better made. I say look becuase i doubt any difference in quality of use
The maxsell bottom cleaning bits i got were of odd collet size that only fits maxsell router... grrrr
I am going to be getting the 4 long straight bit for them 2 x 4s that arent as square as i need them to be
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
EZ cut doesn't have the long shanks in stock (as far as I know), and I have seen bits as long as 3" cutting depth but online only. not sure how much a 4" would flex when cutting though...
here is what I have...
black one is Makita, middle is EZ cut and the shortest a Triton...

Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
Hmmm ... I could be wrong about my bit being 4" long. IIRC it has proportions similar to the one in Timber's picture.

Probably the total length is 4". I have a Whiteside Flush Trim bit that says 4" in the description but cutting length is only 2".

Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
Ezcut 0191, cut dia 1/2, cut len 2, overall len 3.5 according to Ezcut website, but actually 3.75 in. Out of stock at Binondo branch recently, but in stock at Araneta branch.
0199 also in stock, but a larger diameter than I was looking for.
The two other long ones, 0193 and 0197, Panda does not carry.
Of the bottom cleaning bits, it turns out that Panda does carry one and only one of them, 0226, with cut dia 3/4. I initially missed seeing it in the catalog.
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
Ok the bit I have can cut 2-1/2" and its over 4" long. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.
Thank Guad for posting the link to the EzCut website. I saw EzCut has Flute and Bead bits which boatbuilders need. I have a 1/4" set but Ezcut also has a 1/2" set which I have an immediate need for. I could really do without it but my project would be a lot better with these bits. Too bad I'll have to wait till Monday to call Panda.
Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
I've had good results using EZ- Cut bits. Very satisfied with the cuts. However I also had limited use. Do these bits retain sharpness well?

when used properly yes the do keep their sharpness well, when you use them to make deep passes, they tend to chip the carbide...

Re: router into dedicated jointer plan
It may be that the router bits being sold by Lee Valley are Ezcut, or made by same manufacturer that makes Ezcut. This is just a hunch based on the green color of the bits on Lee Valley website, and their statement:
In recent years, inexpensive bits from China have appeared in growing numbers. Our bits are made in Taiwan by a reputable manufacturer with strict quality control.
If so, this would be another case wherein 'it is cheaper locally'.
