Hi There,
The other day a saw a Maxcell router with 1/2" collet at Truevalue, it comes with 12 bits and is a very reasonable price. I wonder has anyone here any experience with this make? Seems they don't have a web-site....strange.

We had a member "beebenator" who had that router and wasn't happy with it since the run out was terrible. From that feedback i wouldn't recommend it. If you can find a skil router you might be better off with it and would probably be in the same price category as the maxcell. If you can specify a budget we can recommend one that would probably fit the bill.

means the collet that holds the router moves sideways making the router bit cut larger than it should and is erratic not to mention kinda scary.... you can read here

Re: Routers

Hi Frank! Welcome to PHM!

Another term for run out could be wobble. Like the wiggle of the car's tires if its not balanced.

Re: Routers

I'd recommend the Skil router, too. Happy with it. Even has an LED light. Small thing but really helpful. I did a review of it somewhere here, just search for it. I recall the only negative was someone complained about the depth stop has a bit of play when tightening. I agree about this shortcoming but learned to work with it.

Contact Golden Maranan of Bosch and he may give you a good deal.

Hi Frankboase,

Get a brand w/ a soft start and a powerful motor around 2-3HP if possible. Buy a separate trimmer router for small piece work. After sales service is also important. Expensive Bits or consumables are future investments once you get the hang of the unit you choose. I prefer to use a router w/ speed control switch to minimize blade burn. Get bits w/ an RPM or a speed range that is a match w/ your unit. Carbide bits are the best especially those that are in the C3 or C4 grade (Tungsten or Dyanite). If the price difference between the best model and the affordable ones are around 20-30% I would still go for the best. A lot of my tools (affordable ones) are now either burnt or wasted due to poor performance. I actually wasted my money thinking i could live w/ a mid-entry unit. Good luck.
